What Does a Per Diem Nurse Practitioner Do?

The Latin term “per diem” means “per day” or “each day.” Per diem nurse practitioners work on a temporary, short-term basis, usually only a few days at a time. As a per diem nurse practitioner, you are not a regular employee; you are called in to fill shifts when hospitals and other health care facilities need work periods covered, either for employees who call in sick or who are on vacation or have additional scheduled time off. You may work in various divisions of the same facility, or may be called in to work at different facilities within the same week. Per diem NPs have the same responsibilities as other nurse practitioners. You provide hands-on care to patients by assessing patients, administering medication, and carrying out treatment. Per diem nurse practitioners can even prescribe medicine with varying levels of independence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Per Diem Nurse Practitioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Nurse Practitioner, you need advanced clinical knowledge, strong diagnostic skills, and a Master’s or Doctoral degree in nursing with state NP licensure. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), telehealth platforms, and up-to-date certifications such as BLS or ACLS are typically required. Flexibility, excellent communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to new environments set top performers apart. These skills ensure that NPs can provide high-quality, efficient care across various settings and meet patient needs with minimal orientation.

What are the typical scheduling expectations and flexibility for a Per Diem Nurse Practitioner?

Per Diem Nurse Practitioners often enjoy a high degree of scheduling flexibility, as they are employed on an as-needed basis rather than a fixed full-time schedule. Shifts may be offered based on patient volume, staff shortages, or special projects, allowing practitioners to choose assignments that fit their availability. However, this flexibility can also mean variability in hours and income, so it's important to communicate your preferences and availability with your employer. Per diem roles are ideal for those seeking work-life balance or supplemental income, but may require adaptability to cover weekends, holidays, or last-minute needs.

What is a Per Diem Nurse Practitioner?

A Per Diem Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse who works on an as-needed or flexible basis, rather than having a set full-time or part-time schedule. They may fill in for staff shortages, cover peak patient loads, or provide specialized care when required. Per diem NPs have the same qualifications and responsibilities as regular NPs, including diagnosing illnesses, prescribing medications, and managing patient care. This role offers flexibility, but hours and benefits may vary compared to permanent staff positions.
