JOB SUMMARYย 

Adheres to Hospitalโ€™s Policies and Procedures and Philosophy of Care.ย  Consistently exhibits professional conduct that is a behavior-based expression of the hospitalโ€™s Standards of Excellence.ย  Assumes responsibility for obtaining blood from patients by venipuncture, toe, heel or finger sticks in a variety of collection tubes or capillaries, some of which contain preservatives or anticoagulants.ย  Provides patient care services adjusted appropriately to the age of the patient.ย  Assumes responsibility for actively contributing to the lab's productivity and cost. Sets up and services all clerical functions of the lab.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:

High school graduate.ย  Must possess active Washington State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist Certification.ย  If does not possess on date of hire, must begin a training program at time of hire that meets WAC requirements, complete the Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist Certification training program, and submit an application to the DOH within 90 days of starting the phlebotomy training program.ย  Requires current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

ย SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Works with syringes, needles, vacutainer tubes, capillary tubes, lancets, stopwatch, glucometers, centrifuges, other laboratory equipment and computer.ย  Requires excellent venipuncture skills.ย  Requires office/clerical skills.ย  May set up specimens under supervision of Medical Technologist.ย  Use of personal protective equipment as appropriate, documentation of immunization/immunity against hepatitis B, and training related to blood-borne pathogens is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:

Adheres to all State and Federal regulations pertaining to hazardous materials and BBP. ย Works in clinical laboratory and patient care areas.ย  Stressful pressure episodes.ย  Sometimes encounters combative or uncooperative patients, physicians and other hospital personnel.ย  Hazards include exposure to infectious agents and risk of injury or harm from needle sticks and chemical agents.

WORK CONTACT GROUP:ย 

All hospital departments, patients, families, visitors, nursing personnel and medical staff.

SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Moderate amounts of sitting, standing and walking.ย  Requires fine motor coordination, clear speech, normal hearing and good visual acuity, including color perception.ย  Light lifting up to 50 pounds.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Greets patient (and family), gives name and position, and explains procedure to be performed before beginning.
  • Verifies patientโ€™s name and date of birth against collection labels (requisitions) before beginning procedure.
  • Prepares all materials for specimen collection at the bedside table prior to approaching patient bedside.
  • Prepares venipuncture site or skin puncture site according to policy and procedure.
  • Performs venipuncture, finger, toe or heel stick according to written policies and procedures.
  • Labels specimens with patient name, date of birth, date and time of collection, and initials.ย  If using preprinted labels, initial each label.
  • Transports specimens to lab, logs (through LIS) receipt of specimen in lab, and distributes specimen to appropriate section.
  • Assists other personnel with difficult collections as needed.
  • Prioritizes work load in order to respond appropriately to STAT requests, timed tests and routine tests; follows up on pending requests.
  • Performs Specimen Status checks at appropriate times.
  • Maintains clean and safe work area.
  • Provides patient care services appropriate to the age of the patient.
  • Maintains appropriate levels of supplies by performing scheduled inventory and observing expiration dates, receives and stores supplies in designated area.
  • Adheres to Hospital and Laboratory Infection Control, Employee Safety and Patient Safety policies and procedures.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities including completion of QA forms identifying problems and adverse outcomes.
  • Participates in mandatory and voluntary continuing education programs.
  • Monitors and maintains logs for all reference lab work.
  • Participates in departmental staff meetings.
  • Maintains laboratory files and records in an efficient and easily accessed manner.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
