What is a per diem ironworker?

A Per Diem Ironworker is a skilled tradesperson who installs, assembles, and repairs structural and reinforcing iron or steel while receiving a daily allowance (per diem) for expenses like lodging and meals. These workers often take temporary or traveling jobs at construction sites, industrial plants, or infrastructure projects where additional labor is needed. Per diem compensation helps offset travel costs, making it an attractive option for ironworkers willing to work in different locations.

To thrive as a Per Diem Ironworker, you need strong skills in steel erection, fabrication, blueprint reading, and proficiency with rigging and welding, often supported by apprenticeship or union training. Familiarity with safety protocols, harnesses, cranes, and OSHA certifications is typically required. Dependability, flexibility, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills, particularly since per diem roles often involve adapting quickly to new job sites and crews. These skills ensure safe, efficient completion of structural projects and the ability to integrate smoothly into varied teams and shifting work environments.

What types of projects and work environments can I expect as a per diem ironworker?

As a Per Diem Ironworker, you can expect to be assigned to a wide range of projects, including commercial buildings, bridges, industrial facilities, and sometimes short-term maintenance or emergency repair jobs.
