What is a per diem informatics nurse?

A Per Diem Informatics Nurse is a registered nurse who works on an as-needed basis, specializing in the integration of nursing science, computer science, and information technology to support healthcare delivery. These nurses help develop, implement, and optimize electronic health records (EHRs) and other healthcare technologies, often providing training and support to clinical staff. Their flexible, per diem status means they work shifts according to organizational needs rather than a fixed schedule, making them valuable for covering absences or supporting special projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem informatics nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Informatics Nurse, you need a solid nursing background, clinical experience, and knowledge of healthcare informatics, often supported by a BSN and informatics certification (such as ANCC). Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), clinical decision support systems, and data analysis tools is essential. Strong communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for working with diverse teams and managing shifting assignments. These skills and qualifications are vital for integrating technology into clinical workflows, ensuring data accuracy, and supporting quality patient care.

What unique challenges might a per diem informatics nurse face compared to full-time informatics nurses?

Per Diem Informatics Nurses often need to quickly adapt to different clinical teams and varying workflows, as they may be scheduled at multiple sites or departments. They must rapidly familiarize themselves with each location's electronic health record (EHR) systems and informatics protocols, sometimes with minimal orientation. This role requires strong communication and self-management skills to effectively collaborate with staff and support end-users, even on short notice. Flexibility and a proactive approach are essential to successfully bridge gaps and ensure smooth technology integration in dynamic healthcare environments.
