What does a per diem electrical worker do?

A Per Diem Electrical worker is an electrician or electrical technician who is hired on a temporary, as-needed basis rather than as a full-time employee. Their duties usually involve installing, maintaining, or repairing electrical systems in various settings, such as construction sites, hospitals, or industrial facilities. 'Per diem' means they are paid a daily rate or receive allowances for each day they work, offering flexibility for both the worker and the employer. This arrangement is ideal for projects that require specialized skills for short periods of time.

How does working as a per diem electrical professional differ from a full-time electrical role in terms of scheduling and team integration?

As a Per Diem Electrical professional, your schedule is typically more flexible and project-based compared to a full-time role, which often requires a fixed weekly commitment. You may be called in to cover for staff shortages, busy periods, or specialized tasks, meaning your work hours can vary significantly from week to week. While you may not be fully embedded in a single team, you will collaborate closely with existing staff on each assignment, quickly adapting to different work environments and protocols. This arrangement can offer exposure to a variety of projects and settings, but it also requires strong communication skills and the ability to integrate seamlessly with different teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem electrician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem Electrician, you need a solid understanding of electrical systems, wiring, safety codes, and typically a journeyman or master electrician license. Familiarity with electrical testing equipment, circuit analyzers, and building management systems is important, along with OSHA safety certification. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and clear communication help you excel in varied work environments and short-term assignments. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality electrical work, which is critical for both compliance and client satisfaction.

Why This Role Stands Out
This is not a checklist-driven commissioning role.
This is a position for someone who:
โ€ข Owns outcomes, not just tasks
โ€ข Understands systems holistically, not in silos
โ€ข Can operate independently while leading others
You will play a direct role in ensuring critical systems are designed correctly, installed properly, and perform under real-world conditions.
What You'll Do
Project Leadership & Execution
โ€ข Lead commissioning activities across the full project lifecycle
โ€ข Execute and oversee functional testing, factory witness testing, and on-site validation
โ€ข Manage multiple assignments while maintaining schedule, budget, and quality expectations
โ€ข Interpret contract documents to identify risks and opportunities
Technical Expertise & Problem Solving
โ€ข Evaluate electrical distribution systems and building system interconnectivity
โ€ข Troubleshoot system performance issues in real time
โ€ข Review design documentation and submittals
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
โ€ข Lead commissioning meetings and communicate findings
โ€ข Serve as a trusted partner to clients and contractors
Operational Contributions
โ€ข Complete field reports, documentation, and time management
โ€ข Support scheduling and revenue targets
Team Development
โ€ข Mentor junior engineers and support training initiatives
What You Bring
Core Qualifications
โ€ข Electrical Engineering degree or Qualified Electrician background
โ€ข 7+ years in electrical systems OR 3+ years commissioning
โ€ข Data center or mission-critical experience
Technical Capabilities
โ€ข Experience with electrical distribution, HVAC systems, controls, fire alarm, and automation
โ€ข Ability to read construction drawings and specifications
Professional Skills
โ€ข Strong analytical and communication skills
โ€ข Ability to lead meetings and manage multiple priorities
Physical Requirements
โ€ข Ability to work in field environments, climb ladders, and lift ~30 lbs
Preferred
โ€ข EIT, CEM, LEED, OSHA 30, BIM experience
Travel Requirements
Regular travel to project sites with potential for broader U.S. travel. Must be able to work on-site as required.
Why FST
At FST, you are part of a team that values execution, accountability, and expertise. Strong performers are recognized, and engineers have opportunities to grow into leadership roles.
Salary Range: $130,000 to $170,000
FST Technical does not offer employment-based visa sponsorship for this position. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship now or in the future.
