What is a per diem counselor?

A Per Diem Counselor is a mental health professional who works on an as-needed or on-call basis, rather than having a set full-time or part-time schedule. These counselors may provide support, therapy, or crisis intervention in various settings such as hospitals, schools, or community organizations. Their flexible work arrangement allows employers to meet fluctuating staffing needs, while counselors can choose shifts that fit their availability. Per Diem Counselors perform many of the same duties as regular counselors, including assessing clients, developing treatment plans, and providing counseling services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem counselor?

To thrive as a Per Diem Counselor, you need a background in counseling, psychology, or social work, often with a relevant degree and state licensure or certification. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and commonly used assessment tools is typical for this role. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and adaptability help counselors effectively support diverse client needs and work with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure high-quality, flexible care and positive client outcomes, especially in dynamic or on-call environments.

How does the flexible schedule of a per diem counselor impact collaboration with full-time staff and continuity of care for clients?

As a Per Diem Counselor, your schedule is often based on organizational needs, which means you may work irregular or on-call shifts. While this offers flexibility, it can also present challenges in staying updated on client progress and team decisions. To ensure continuity of care, Per Diem Counselors typically rely on thorough documentation, regular handoffs, and close communication with full-time staff. Proactive engagement during shift transitions and team meetings is essential to maintain seamless support for clients and foster effective teamwork.
