What is a per diem construction?

A Per Diem Construction job is a position in the construction industry where workers receive a daily allowance, or per diem, to cover expenses such as lodging, meals, and travel while working away from home. These jobs are common for contractors, tradespeople, and laborers who travel to various job sites. Per diem rates vary based on employer policies and location, often following federal or company-set guidelines. These positions can be short-term or long-term, depending on the project needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in per diem construction, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Per Diem Construction role, you need strong construction skills, familiarity with building codes, and hands-on experience with various construction tasks, typically gained through previous construction work or vocational training. Experience with common construction tools, power equipment, and safety certifications such as OSHA 10 or 30 are often required. Flexibility, reliability, and effective communication are key soft skills that help you succeed when working with different teams and adapting to varying job sites. These competencies are essential to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the expected quality standards in a dynamic, day-to-day employment setting.

What are the typical work schedules and expectations for per diem construction?

Overall, you can expect a dynamic work environment with opportunities to develop skills across multiple construction disciplines.
