What is a pcb testing job?

A PCB Testing job involves inspecting and evaluating printed circuit boards (PCBs) to ensure they meet quality, functionality, and safety standards. This includes conducting electrical tests, identifying defects, and troubleshooting issues using specialized equipment. PCB testers work with design and engineering teams to verify performance and suggest improvements. Their role is critical in industries like electronics, telecommunications, and automotive manufacturing.

What are the typical daily tasks and challenges faced by someone working in pcb testing?

As a PCB Testing professional, your typical day includes running diagnostic tests on printed circuit boards, interpreting test results, troubleshooting faults, and documenting findings. You may work closely with design engineers and production teams to resolve issues and implement corrective actions. One common challenge in this role is identifying and isolating complex or intermittent faults, often under tight production deadlines. Effective time management and communication with team members are essential, as your role directly impacts product quality and delivery timelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the pcb testing position, and why are they important?

To thrive in PCB Testing, you need a solid understanding of electronics principles, attention to detail, and hands-on experience with testing equipment, typically supported by a diploma or degree in electronics or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, automated test equipment (ATE), and software platforms for test scripting is crucial, and certifications like IPC-A-610 can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you troubleshoot efficiently and document results. These competencies ensure accurate fault detection, minimize production errors, and facilitate smooth collaboration across engineering and manufacturing teams.

Job description

Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

This Mechanical Engineer role focuses on the design and development of a flagship 1.6T (1600 Gb/s) optical transceiver and related photonic packaging solutions. You will work at the intersection of mechanical engineering, thermal management, and advanced photonics, creating highly compact, high‑density modules that integrate optical fibers, microprocessors, and precision interconnects into manufacturable, scalable products. The work involves sophisticated technologies such as heat transfer, advanced material systems, and design for manufacturability, all applied to intricate, vertically stacked assemblies that enable high-speed connectivity between large data centers.

Responsibilities

  • Design high‑density PCB enclosures and mechanical architectures for compact optical transceiver modules using 3D CAD tools such as CREO and SolidWorks.
  • Develop mechanical designs that support advanced photonic packaging, including vertically layered components and optical fibers emerging from the top of the module.
  • Apply thermal management principles to ensure reliable operation of densely packed photonic components, microprocessors, and interconnects within compact form factors.
  • Perform tolerance analysis, interference checks, and design for manufacturability (DFM) to ensure robust, scalable, and cost‑effective mechanical solutions.
  • Incorporate manufacturing principles and serviceability considerations into new product development, enabling efficient assembly, testing, and field support.
  • Lead mechanical engineering projects involving multiple engineers, coordinating activities and ensuring alignment with project goals and timelines.
  • Conduct and lead cross‑functional and mechanical design reviews, presenting concepts, analyses, risks, and mitigation plans to stakeholders.
  • Assess projects, identify technical and schedule risks, and articulate these clearly while defining and refining project milestones.
  • Develop projects using a stage‑gate process, ensuring that deliverables at each phase meet technical, quality, and regulatory requirements.
  • Use finite element analysis and other key development tools to validate mechanical designs against performance, reliability, and safety standards.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers, sharing best practices in mechanical design, DFM, tolerance analysis, and photonic packaging.
  • Collaborate effectively with a global, cross‑functional team, including engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain, to deliver products at scale.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable industry, sector‑specific, regulatory, and safety standards relevant to telecom and optical transceiver products.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by influencing others, promoting best practices, and supporting the development of sustainable, scalable solutions.

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of experience designing high‑density PCB enclosures using CREO and/or SolidWorks.
  • Strong expertise in thermal management for compact, high‑power electronic and photonic assemblies.
  • Proficiency in mechanical design for manufacturability (DFM), including GD&T, tolerance analysis, and interference checks.
  • Experience in new product development within mechanical engineering, particularly for telecom or optical transceiver applications.
  • Detailed knowledge of industry or sector‑specific regulatory and safety standards applicable to mechanical and photonic systems.
  • Broad experience developing high‑complexity mechanical engineering projects that require specializations such as tolerance analysis, DFM, and serviceability.
  • Proficient use of key development tools and design standards, including 3D CAD, finite element analysis, tolerancing practices, and manufacturing principles.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing, in a technical and cross‑functional environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a global team and collaborate across disciplines and locations.
  • Capability to assess projects, articulate risks, and define project milestones within a structured stage‑gate process.
  • Experience leading mechanical engineering projects with multiple engineers assigned.
  • Experience leading cross‑functional and mechanical design reviews.
  • Mechanical Engineering degree (BSME, MSME, PhD, or equivalent experience).
  • 8+ years of experience in mechanical design and/or verification or other key mechanical engineering competencies.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with advanced photonic packaging and integration of optical fibers into compact mechanical modules.
  • Experience in telecom or data center hardware, particularly optical transceivers or high‑speed connectivity systems.
  • Familiarity with serviceability considerations, including ease of assembly, maintenance, and field replacement.
  • Ability to influence others and share best practices across engineering teams.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and supporting their technical development.
  • Comfort working within large, global organizations that combine engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain capabilities.
  • Interest in contributing to sustainable, environmentally conscious engineering solutions and processes.
