What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB Layout Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Layout Designer, you need a strong understanding of electronic circuit design, signal integrity, and industry standards, often backed by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with PCB design software such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, as well as knowledge of IPC standards, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication with engineers and manufacturing teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate, reliable PCB designs that meet performance, manufacturability, and safety requirements.

What are PCB layout designers?

PCB layout designers are professionals who create the physical design of printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in electronic devices. They translate electrical schematics into detailed layouts, specifying the placement of components and the routing of electrical connections. Their work ensures that the PCB meets electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing requirements, and they use specialized software like Altium Designer or Eagle. PCB layout designers collaborate with engineers to optimize performance, reliability, and manufacturability of electronic products.

What are some common challenges faced by PCB Layout Designers when collaborating with hardware engineers and manufacturers?

PCB Layout Designers often need to balance the electrical requirements set by hardware engineers with the practical constraints of manufacturing. This includes ensuring signal integrity while managing component placement and routing within tight board dimensions. Effective communication with hardware engineers is essential to clarify design intent and resolve conflicts, while collaboration with manufacturers helps ensure that the design is both producible and cost-effective. These challenges require strong teamwork, attention to detail, and a good understanding of both engineering and manufacturing processes.

What is the difference between Pcb Layout Design vs Pcb Manufacturing Engineer?

Job Description

The Role:

To achieve our vision of a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion, GM Mechatronics Hardware platform is evolving to provide robust service to our customers.

We are seeking a highly experienced, technical engineer in propulsion hardware and electrical design as we continue to staff a hardware engineering team that will own the end-to-end design and development of our propulsion controller hardware.

In this role, the Senior Hardware Design Engineer will be supporting the technical design & development of the propulsion controller hardware for GM's next generation vehicles. The role requires an experienced professional with a background in automotive ECU architecture, design, and analysis, and a proven ability of successfully launching ECU's into production.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background and a proven track record in electrical schematic design, performing controller validation/testing, manufacturing knowledge, warranty analysis, and instrumentation design. You will work with cross-functional teams (Semiconductor, DREs, GM software, PCB layout, Mechanical Engineering, Supplier, Validation, Quality) to deliver quality product on time.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Design of propulsion controller electrical hardware: from schematic capture, worst case analysis, PCB layout, bring-up, debug, signal integrity and power integrity (SI/PI), design verification test (environmental and EMC), to manufacturing support and production launch.
  • Design and development of the propulsion controller hardware (from concept design to launch) while meeting cost, timing, quality, and safety targets.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as software, mechanical, and manufacturing, to ensure seamless integration of the electrical design of the propulsion controller hardware.
  • Work closely with contract manufacturing partners to ensure successful product build, from prototype through to mass production, while maintaining quality, cost, and timing targets.
  • Electrical schematic design and PCB layout.
  • Support new IC design/development strategic to new propulsion controller designs and architectures.
  • Perform/support detailed hardware analysis - worst case analysis, thermal analysis, signal integrity, power integrity, etc.
  • Execute bring-up of hardware design from power supplies, SoCs, MCUs, network devices, solenoid/valve control, instrumentation, etc.
