How much do pcb layout design jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for pcb layout design in Michigan is $87,774.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $65,800.00 and $104,600.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB layout designer?

To thrive as a PCB Layout Designer, you need a strong understanding of electronic circuit design, signal integrity, and industry standards, often backed by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with PCB design software such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, as well as knowledge of IPC standards, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication with engineers and manufacturing teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate, reliable PCB designs that meet performance, manufacturability, and safety requirements.

What is a PCB layout designer?

PCB layout designers are professionals who create the physical design of printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in electronic devices. They translate electrical schematics into detailed layouts, specifying the placement of components and the routing of electrical connections. Their work ensures that the PCB meets electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing requirements, and they use specialized software like Altium Designer or Eagle. PCB layout designers collaborate with engineers to optimize performance, reliability, and manufacturability of electronic products.

What are some common challenges faced by PCB layout designers when collaborating with hardware engineers and manufacturers?

PCB Layout Designers often need to balance the electrical requirements set by hardware engineers with the practical constraints of manufacturing. This includes ensuring signal integrity while managing component placement and routing within tight board dimensions. Effective communication with hardware engineers is essential to clarify design intent and resolve conflicts, while collaboration with manufacturers helps ensure that the design is both producible and cost-effective. These challenges require strong teamwork, attention to detail, and a good understanding of both engineering and manufacturing processes.

What is the difference between Pcb Layout Design vs Pcb Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectPcb Layout DesignPcb Manufacturing Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning PCB layouts, component placement, routingOverseeing PCB production, quality control, manufacturing processes
Skills & CertificationsElectronics design, CAD tools, PCB design certificationsManufacturing processes, quality standards, IPC certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, CAD software, collaborative teamsManufacturing facilities, quality assurance labs
Industry UsageElectronics, consumer devices, aerospaceElectronics manufacturing, industrial equipment

While Pcb Layout Design focuses on creating detailed PCB layouts and ensuring electrical integrity, Pcb Manufacturing Engineer manages the production process, quality, and assembly. Both roles are essential in the electronics industry but differ in their core responsibilities and skill sets.

Job description

Job Description

DUTIES: Obtain the datasheet or technical documentation for the electronic component that needs to be created, including information such as pinout, dimensions, recommended land pattern, and electrical characteristics. Use the EDA tool's symbol editor to create a schematic symbol that represents the component's electrical connections and functionality. Place pins on the symbol and assign appropriate pin names, numbers, and electrical properties based on the component's datasheet. Use the EDA tool's footprint editor to create a PCB footprint (land pattern) for the component, involving defining the pad shapes, sizes, and locations based on the recommended land pattern provided in the component's datasheet such as component package type, pin pitch, and manufacturing requirements. Use EDA tool knowledge and work with provided APIs to create a comprehensive and efficient part request form. Create and maintain a comprehensive electronic component library, including accurate component data, schematic symbols, and PCB footprints. Create circuit schematics using schematic capture tools, such as Mentor Graphics to represent the electrical connections and functionality of the circuit. Develop PCB layouts using software tools like Mentor Graphics PADS, considering factors such as component placement, routing, signal integrity, power distribution, and manufacturability. Ensure that the designed schematics and PCB layouts comply with relevant industry standards, such as IPC standards for PCB design and manufacturing. Train and mentor engineering teams about the tool, symbol, cell and schematic creation. Create and develop hardware components and systems, including circuit boards, processors, and other electronic devices. Identify and resolve issues in hardware designs, including debugging and modifying existing designs to improve performance or address problems. Ensure that designs comply with relevant regulations and standards, such as safety and environmental guidelines. Hybrid Work Policy - 3 days In-office, 2 days remote - Must be able to report to local office.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field of study and Five (5) years of experience as a Software Engineer, Technical Leader, Practice Leader, or related role. Five years of experience with: Automotive Electronic Control Unit (ECU) design and processes; and Electronic components, their specifications, and their interactions within a circuit. Three years of experience with: Schematic capture and PCB layout design using industry-standard EDA tools including Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, Eagle, and Mentor Graphics; Hardware in loop simulation systems and testing; and Circuit design and PCB layout including IPC standards.
