What is a PBM manager?

A PBM Manager, or Pharmacy Benefit Manager Manager, is a professional responsible for overseeing the relationship between healthcare providers, insurance companies, and pharmacy benefit management companies. They work to ensure that prescription drug benefits are managed efficiently, negotiate contracts, and monitor compliance with regulations. PBM Managers analyze drug utilization data, manage formularies, and help control drug costs while ensuring patients have access to necessary medications. Their role is crucial in optimizing pharmacy benefit programs for employers, health plans, and other organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PBM manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PBM (Pharmacy Benefit Manager) Manager, you need a strong background in pharmacy operations, healthcare management, and a bachelor's degree in pharmacy, healthcare administration, or a related field. Familiarity with pharmacy benefit management systems, claims processing software, and regulatory compliance tools is crucial. Strong analytical skills, leadership, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with clients, vendors, and internal teams. These competencies are essential to optimize drug benefit programs, ensure regulatory compliance, and deliver value-driven healthcare solutions.

What are some common challenges PBM managers face when coordinating between pharmacies, insurers, and healthcare providers?

PBM Managers often encounter challenges related to balancing the interests of various stakeholders, such as negotiating contracts and ensuring formulary compliance while maintaining cost-effectiveness and patient satisfaction. They must navigate complex regulatory requirements and address discrepancies in drug pricing or reimbursement. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as the role frequently involves resolving issues that arise from claim disputes, prior authorization processes, and network management. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is key to streamlining operations and optimizing outcomes for all parties involved.

Job description

Who We Are:

Interra Health is a fast-growing healthcare technology company transforming how providers and patients navigate the prescription journey. Formed through the merger of DoseSpot, Arrive Health, and pVerify, Interra Health delivers trusted eligibility, real-time coverage and pricing insights, prescribing tools, and pharmacy transparency at the point of care—helping providers make informed decisions and patients access the right medications with greater clarity and affordability. Backed by strong market momentum and a bold vision for the future of connected care, Interra Health offers the chance to join an innovative, mission-driven team working at the intersection of software and healthcare to reduce friction, improve access, and make the healthcare experience better for everyone.

Interra Health is looking for a Senior Product Manager to own our Real-Time Prescription Benefits (RTPB) and Pharmacy Alternatives product line. This product line includes the pharmacy benefit and transaction-check capabilities that tell prescribers what a medication will actually cost and whether it's covered before the patient ever reaches the counter. This is one of the highest-stakes product lines in our portfolio: accuracy and speed here directly shape prescribing decisions, patient cost, and adherence.

You will own the RTPB roadmap end-to-end — partnering with Engineering, payer/PBM connectivity partners, Compliance, and Clinical stakeholders to keep pace with NCPDP standards, formulary and copay data accuracy, and e-prescribing integration requirements. This role requires genuine pharmacy domain fluency: you need to understand how benefit checks, formulary logic, and prescriber workflows actually work in order to make credible trade-offs and earn trust with clinical and payer stakeholders. The right person combines strong product instincts with a relevant clinical background and is comfortable owning a regulated, technically complex product line in a post-merger environment where systems and standards are still consolidating.

What You'll Do
  • Own the RTPB and Pharmacy Alternatives product roadmap end-to-end — from problem definition through launch and post-launch iteration
  • Translate NCPDP real-time pharmacy benefit standards and payer/PBM connectivity requirements into clear product specs and engineering-ready requirements
  • Own formulary, copay, and benefit-check data accuracy — partnering with Engineering and payer/PBM connections to diagnose and resolve accuracy or latency issues
  • Partner with Compliance and Legal to ensure RTPB features meet applicable pharmacy, payer, and data-privacy regulatory requirements
  • Partner with Clinical and Pharmacy Ops stakeholders to validate that product decisions result in actionable insights for prescribers
  • Manage relationships with payer/PBM connectivity partners on integration requirements, testing, and issue resolution
  • Define and track success metrics for RTPB and Pharmacy Alternatives — transaction accuracy, latency, adoption, and prescriber/pharmacy satisfaction — and report against clear targets
  • Use AI tools to accelerate requirements drafting, data analysis, and documentation, raising both the speed and quality of product output
  • Represent RTPB & Pharmacy Alts in cross-functional planning, prioritization, and executive updates, and advocate for the roadmap against competing priorities
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree and 8+ years in product management, including ownership of complex, regulated healthcare or pharmacy technology products (equivalent experience considered)
  • Clinical background required — e.g., PharmD, other pharmacy or clinical experience, or direct experience building pharmacy/PBM/benefit-check technology
  • Working knowledge of NCPDP standards, real-time pharmacy benefit (RTPB) transactions, e-prescribing, and formulary/copay data structures
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex regulatory and clinical requirements into clear product specifications
  • Proven cross-functional collaboration with Engineering, Compliance, and external payer/PBM partners
  • Experience owning a product roadmap with measurable accuracy, latency, or adoption outcomes
  • Comfort operating in a fast-paced, post-merger environment where systems, standards, and structures are still consolidating
Nice to Haves
  • Direct experience with e-prescribing network integrations
  • Experience working directly with PBMs or payer connectivity teams
  • Familiarity with medication access, adherence, or patient cost-transparency solutions
  • Active pharmacy licensure or clinical credential
Pre-Employment Drug Screening:

This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, where permitted by applicable law. Any required screening will be conducted after a conditional offer of employment and in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.

Benefits & Perks:
  • Remote work environment with a flexible work schedule to encourage work-life balance
  • Annual company offsite
  • Generous leave package including flexible time off policy that encourages team members to take time off to relax and recharge; plus 13 paid holidays, paid sick leave, and paid parental leave
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for you and your family, plus a company funded FSA & HSA (dependent on which medical plan you choose)
  • 401(k) company match
  • One-time workspace reimbursement to help you optimize your remote workspace
