Payroll Associate information

What is a payroll associate?

Payroll Associates are professionals responsible for processing employee paychecks, ensuring accurate calculation of wages, withholding taxes, and managing payroll records. They verify timesheets, resolve discrepancies, and comply with federal and state payroll regulations. Payroll Associates often collaborate with human resources and accounting departments to maintain accurate financial records and support employee inquiries regarding compensation. Their work is essential for ensuring employees are paid correctly and on time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a payroll associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Payroll Associate, you need a solid understanding of payroll processes, accounting principles, and attention to detail, often supported by a degree in finance, accounting, or related fields. Familiarity with payroll software such as ADP, QuickBooks, or Paychex, and sometimes certification like FPC or CPP, is typically required. Strong organizational skills, discretion, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure accurate and timely payroll processing, compliance with regulations, and confidentiality of sensitive employee information.

What are some common challenges a payroll associate might face, and how can they be addressed?

Payroll Associates often encounter challenges such as managing tight deadlines during payroll cycles, handling sensitive employee data with confidentiality, and staying updated with frequently changing tax regulations. Effective time management and strong attention to detail are essential to avoid errors and ensure compliance. Collaborating closely with HR and finance teams can help resolve discrepancies quickly and maintain smooth payroll operations.

The Payroll Associate typically has more responsibilities related to payroll processing, compliance, and data management, often requiring some certifications or experience. The Payroll Clerk usually handles administrative payroll tasks, focusing on data entry and record keeping. Both roles are essential in payroll operations, but the Payroll Associate often has a broader scope and may serve as a stepping stone to more advanced payroll or HR positions.

How do you become a payroll associate?

To become a payroll associate, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with strong attention to detail and proficiency in payroll software or spreadsheets. Relevant skills include understanding payroll laws and regulations, and some employers may prefer candidates with prior experience or certifications in payroll or accounting. On-the-job training is common, and familiarity with tools like ADP or QuickBooks can be advantageous.

Is doing payroll a hard job?

Payroll associates are responsible for processing employee wages, ensuring accuracy, and complying with tax laws, which requires attention to detail and knowledge of payroll software. The job can be straightforward but may involve handling complex calculations, deadlines, and sensitive information, making it moderately challenging depending on the organization’s size and complexity.

Accounting and People & Culture Administrator - The Queen's Cue, Marriott Tribute Collection

Boarshead Hospitality Inc

Stratford, ON

CA$25/hr

Full-time

Job description

At The Queen's Cue and Crescent Hotels & Resorts, we are a team of hospitality professionals that are deeply connected to & proud of the exceptional experiences we provide for our guests. More than that, we know our Associates are the shining stars of what we do!

We understand what it takes to be a part of something great. We will encourage you to bring your true self to work every day, we will celebrate you and we will cheer you on as you shine bright in your career journey. Whether it be our health and wellness programs, best in class learning and development or our travel discounts that ‘feed your inner explorer’, we work hard to create and deliver on what YOU need.  We are ready for you to start your journey with us where You Belong. We Care. Shine Bright.

Opening soon, The Queen’s Cue, a Marriott Tribute Portfolio Hotel, is seeking a detail-oriented and driven Accounting & HR Administrator to support the financial and people operations of our boutique property.

This is a critical role that will establish the financial backbone of the hotel while supporting the development of our associate experience. With a strong emphasis on accounting, you will oversee day-to-day financial processes, ensure compliance with Crescent and Marriott standards, and support accurate, timely reporting. Alongside this, you will play a key role in onboarding, payroll coordination, and maintaining associate records as we build our opening team. This is a unique opportunity to be part of building a hotel from the ground up - bringing structure, precision, and professionalism to both our financial operations and our people processes.

Does this sound like you?

As our Accounting & HR Administrator, you will take ownership of the hotel’s core financial processes - ensuring all revenue is accurately recorded, invoices are properly approved and paid, and all financial controls align with Crescent standards.

You are confident working across accounts payable and receivable, supporting reconciliations, reviewing Night Audit outputs, and maintaining accurate financial records that support both daily operations and month-end reporting. Working closely with the General Manager and Regional Director of Finance, you play a key role in ensuring the property is financially sound, organized, and audit-ready from day one.

Alongside your finance responsibilities, you bring a structured and detail-oriented approach to HR administration - supporting onboarding, payroll coordination, and maintaining accurate associate records as we build our opening team. You are comfortable managing multiple priorities, ensuring compliance across documentation, and contributing to a positive and professional associate experience.

You thrive in environments where precision matters. You take pride in accuracy, accountability, and follow-through, and are known for being someone others can rely on to keep things organized and running smoothly. In a pre-opening setting, you are adaptable, proactive, and ready to step in wherever needed to support the broader team.

Who we are looking for:

  • Strong understanding of accounting fundamentals (AP, AR, reconciliations, financial controls)
  • Experience working with hotel systems (PMS, accounting platforms) is an asset
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Comfortable working in a pre-opening environment with evolving processes
  • Clear and professional communication skills
  • A proactive, self-starting mindset with a willingness to “pitch in” across departments
  • Experience supporting HR functions (onboarding, payroll, records) is preferred but not essential

We are committed to providing you with:

  1. An exceptional benefit plan for eligible associates & your family members.
  2. RRSP matching program for eligible associates.
  3. Highly competitive hourly wages, expected to range from approximately $23.00–$25.00 per hour based on experience.
  4. Discounts with Crescent managed properties in North America, and Marriott Worldwide for you & your family members.
  5. A workplace that you can be proud of, where you are valued, trusted and supported by the team.

We welcome applications from people with disabilities. Accommodations are available upon request for candidates taking part in all aspects of the selection process. This posting represents a current vacancy and Crescent Hotels & Resorts does not use artificial intelligence to screen, assess, and/or select applicants.

At Crescent Hotels & Resorts we strive to create a great place to work where associates at all levels of our organization are respected for their differences, just like the guests and owners we serve.  That’s why we are dedicated to creating an environment that facilitates open and honest conversations about race, equity, diversity, and inclusion.  By examining our own beliefs and behaviors, we can create change through training, recruiting, and promoting diverse talent to strengthen our culture.
