A Glimpse of the Job

The Risk and Insurance Officer I serves as the university's subject matter expert for property and casualty insurance, responsible for managing the university's insurance portfolio, claims management, and contractual risk transfer reviews. This position liaises with the Texas A&M University System Office of Risk Management and advises university departments on risk management and insurance strategies while supporting the university's broader risk, ethics, and compliance program.

Responsibilities

Insurance Program Administration

  • Manages and administers the university's property and casualty insurance portfolio, including evaluating program effectiveness and coordinating the submission of underwriting data

  • Processes premium allocations by verifying assessed charges, assigning costs to university departments, and coordinating the timely invoice payments

  • Assesses departmental needs to advise on insurance options and facilitates the procurement of identified coverages

  • Reviews insurance provisions within third-party contracts and advises on alignment with university standards to support effective contractual risk transfer

  • Develops and maintains resources and training for university departments on insurance procedures and risk mitigation strategies

  • Serves as the primary university liaison to the Texas A&M University System Office of Risk Management for all insurance matters

Claims Management and Analysis

  • Manages the investigation and evaluation of all property and liability claims filed against the university by communicating with claimants, university departments, and the System Office of Risk Management

  • Coordinates property claims filed on behalf of the university by compiling and submitting all expense documentation and evaluating settlement options to maximize financial recovery

  • Performs analysis of claim and loss data to identify and report on loss trends

  • Formulates and recommends loss control methods and mitigation strategies to leadership

Risk and Compliance Activities

  • Supports internal audits and reviews by gathering information, coordinating responses, and tracking the implementation of corrective action plans

  • Contributes to the continuous improvement of the university's risk, ethics and compliance program by helping to develop and refine resources, guidelines, policies and procedures

  • Performs other risk and compliance functions as assigned, including serving on committees, preparing reports, and participating in special projects

Required Education and Experience

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others
