What is payment processing?

Payment processing refers to the handling of financial transactions between a customer and a business, typically involving credit cards, debit cards, or digital payments. It includes the authorization, verification, and transfer of funds from the customer's account to the merchant's account. Payment processors act as intermediaries to ensure transactions are secure, efficient, and compliant with industry standards. This process is essential for businesses to accept electronic payments and provide a smooth checkout experience for customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a payment processing specialist?

To thrive as a Payment Processing Specialist, you need keen attention to detail, strong numerical and analytical abilities, and typically a background in finance or accounting. Familiarity with payment gateways, accounting software (like QuickBooks or SAP), and PCI compliance standards is commonly required. Excellent organizational skills, problem-solving ability, and effective communication help you manage high transaction volumes and resolve discrepancies efficiently. These skills ensure accurate, timely processing of payments, minimize errors, and support secure, trustworthy financial operations.

What are some common challenges faced by payment processing specialists, and how can they be addressed?

Payment processing specialists often encounter challenges such as handling transaction discrepancies, ensuring compliance with industry regulations, and managing high transaction volumes efficiently. These challenges can be addressed by staying up to date with the latest payment technologies, consistently following security protocols, and collaborating closely with finance and IT teams to resolve issues quickly. Job description

Location: Dallas, TX
Job Type: Full-Time
Base Salary: $100,000
Commission: Eligible after successful completion of 90-day probationary period
Travel: Some travel required

About the Role

Sphere Rocket is hiring a Payment Processing Sales & Implementation Manager to help build and grow our payment processing division.

This is a unique hybrid role combining sales, relationship management, technical implementation, and customer adoption.

You won't simply sell a merchant on switching processors and hand the account off to someone else.

You will own the relationship from the initial conversation through migration, activation, and ongoing processing adoption.

We have an existing ecosystem of current clients, past clients, new customers, affiliates, strategic partners, business relationships, masterminds, events, and conferences that create a significant opportunity for payment processing growth.

Your job is to turn those relationships into active processing accounts.

What You'll Do

  • Sell our payment processing solutions to current clients, former clients, new clients, partners, and other businesses within our network
  • Own the full sales cycle from initial conversation through activation
  • Conduct discovery with business owners to understand their current processor, processing volume, rates, payment structure, and pain points
  • Explain payment processing options, pricing, economics, and migration requirements
  • Build strong relationships with CEOs, founders, operators, and finance teams
  • Manage merchant applications, onboarding, underwriting, and documentation
  • Personally help businesses migrate from their existing payment processor
  • Assist with technical setup, integrations, subscriptions, payment links, payouts, and other payment workflows
  • Troubleshoot issues that arise during implementation
  • Ensure approved merchants actually begin processing
  • Follow up with merchants to increase adoption and processing volume
  • Identify opportunities to move additional payment volume onto the platform
  • Track merchant pipeline, approvals, activations, processing volume, and revenue
  • Work closely with our payment partners to resolve merchant issues
  • Train Sphere Rocket's Sales, Customer Success, and Partnerships teams on identifying processing opportunities
  • Attend Sphere Rocket events, masterminds, trainings, conferences, and partner events
  • Present payment processing opportunities to groups of business owners
  • Travel when necessary for conferences, events, strategic accounts, and major opportunities
  • Help create repeatable systems and processes for our growing payments division

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is a combination of a strong salesperson and a technically capable operator.

You should be someone who can confidently have a sales conversation with a CEO and then turn around and help their team successfully implement the technology.

You Should Have:

  • Strong sales and relationship-building skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Confidence speaking directly with business owners and executives
  • Strong technical aptitude and ability to learn new software quickly
  • Ability to troubleshoot technology and implementation problems
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple merchant migrations at the same time
  • Strong follow-up and sense of urgency
  • Comfort presenting in front of groups
  • Willingness to travel when needed
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of results
  • Ability to explain complicated financial or technical concepts in simple terms
  • A process-driven mindset
  • A willingness to solve problems instead of passing them to someone else

Preferred Experience

Experience in any of the following is a plus:

  • Payment processing
  • Merchant services
  • Fintech
  • SaaS sales
  • B2B sales
  • Account Executive roles
  • Solutions consulting
  • Technical implementation
  • Merchant onboarding
  • Customer success
  • Banking or financial technology

Previous payment processing experience is preferred but not required.

We would rather hire an exceptional salesperson with strong technical abilities and a desire to learn than someone with years of payments experience who lacks urgency, ownership, or relationship-building skills.

How Success Will Be Measured

This role is focused on actual processing adoption—not simply signing accounts.

Success will be measured through metrics such as:

  • New processing volume generated
  • Number of qualified merchant opportunities
  • Merchant conversion rate
  • Approved merchants
  • Activated merchants
  • Time from agreement to activation
  • Percentage of projected processing volume successfully migrated
  • Growth of processing volume within existing accounts
  • Payment processing revenue generated

First 90 Days

Your first 90 days will be a paid probationary and ramp period at a $100,000 annual base salary.

During this period, you will learn our payment ecosystem, technology, merchant onboarding process, underwriting requirements, client base, and sales process.

By the end of 90 days, we expect you to be able to independently:

  • Run merchant discovery calls
  • Present our payment solution
  • Manage merchant applications
  • Coordinate migrations
  • Troubleshoot implementation issues
  • Build and manage a merchant pipeline
  • Successfully launch merchants
  • Generate active processing volume

After successfully completing the 90-day probationary period, the position will become eligible for a commission structure tied to performance and payment processing growth.

Who Will Thrive Here

You'll likely thrive in this position if you:

  • Love selling but also enjoy solving technical problems
  • Take ownership from beginning to end
  • Move quickly and communicate quickly
  • Are comfortable around entrepreneurs and business owners
  • Don't need every step spelled out for you
  • Enjoy figuring out how new software works
  • Follow up until things actually get done
  • Care about the result after the sale
  • Can manage a large number of moving pieces without losing details
  • Want the opportunity to help build a major new revenue division

About Sphere Rocket

Sphere Rocket is a rapidly growing business services company serving thousands of entrepreneurs and businesses.

Our existing client base, partnerships, events, and business-owner network give us a unique opportunity to build a substantial payment processing business without relying exclusively on traditional cold merchant acquisition.

We're looking for someone who wants to take ownership of that opportunity.

This isn't a role where you simply sell payment processing.

You'll help build the payment processing division.
