Job description

Job Title: Asphalt Paver Operator

Location: Byram, MS

An Asphalt Paver Operator is a skilled heavy equipment professional who safely drives, controls, and monitors the paving machine. They are responsible for evenly spreading and leveling hot-mix asphalt to exact grades, thicknesses, and widths across highways, streets, and parking lots.

Core Responsibilities

  • Machine Operation: Maneuver the paver in a straight line while controlling the screed (auger, hopper, and temperature) to ensure proper mat thickness and eliminate joints or voids.
  • Truck Coordination: Align and ease the paver forward while safely pushing dump trucks to maintain a continuous, uninterrupted flow of asphalt into the hopper.
  • Maintenance: Perform pre-shift safety inspections, lubricate moving parts, and clean the machine after use to prevent asphalt buildup.
  • Crew Communication: Work closely with the Screed Operator, Dump Man, and Foreman using hand signals to communicate project needs and hazards.
  • Safety & Compliance: Enforce work zone safety, direct traffic, and wear required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) while working in extreme outdoor conditions.

Key Qualifications

  • Experience: Usually requires 2-5 years of heavy equipment or paving industry experience.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to repetitively lift over 50 and stand or walk for long shifts in hot and humid environments.
  • Certifications: A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is often preferred for hauling equipment to and from job sites.
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of computerized cross-slope controls, paving patterns, and construction material requirements

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen with a “Negative” result.
  • Must be able to complete a post- offer physical with a “Capable” result
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Be willing to work outdoors in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold
  • Experience preferred.

Work Environment:

This role operates in both office and active construction site environments. Candidate must be able to perform site walks, attend field meetings, and ensure on-site safety and compliance.
