What are some common challenges faced by Pattern Makers in the apparel industry?

Pattern Makers often encounter challenges such as accommodating unique design specifications while ensuring garments maintain proper fit and functionality. Balancing creative vision with technical limitations, especially when working with new fabrics or manufacturing processes, can require innovative problem-solving. Additionally, managing tight deadlines and frequent iterations with design and production teams demands strong organizational skills. Collaborating closely with designers, sample makers, and production staff is key to overcoming these challenges and achieving high-quality, finished products.

What is a Pattern Making job?

A Pattern Making job involves creating templates or blueprints for garments, accessories, or other textile-based products. Pattern makers translate design sketches into accurate patterns that guide the cutting and sewing process in production. They use specialized software or manual techniques to ensure proper fit, proportions, and construction details. Precision and attention to detail are essential, as patterns dictate the final look and functionality of a product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Pattern Making position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Pattern Making, a strong understanding of garment construction, dimensional accuracy, and textile properties is essential, often supported by coursework or experience in fashion design or apparel technology. Familiarity with pattern drafting software like Gerber, Optitex, or CAD systems is typically required, and formal certifications can be an advantage. Attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure the creation of functional, well-fitting garments and facilitate smooth collaboration within the production team.

What career can you have with pattern making?

Pattern making is a key skill in the fashion and apparel industry, enabling careers such as fashion designer, technical designer, sample maker, or pattern maker technician. Professionals in this field often work in clothing manufacturing, costume design, or product development, utilizing tools like CAD software and sewing techniques. Advanced skills and certifications can lead to roles in design management or pattern development for large brands.

Job description

A Career at HARMAN
As a technology leader that is rapidly on the move, HARMAN is filled with people who are focused on making life better. Innovation, inclusivity and teamwork are a part of our DNA. When you add that to the challenges we take on and solve together, you'll discover that at HARMAN you can grow, make a difference and be proud of the work you do every day.
About the Role
In this role, you will report to the Manager - Cloud Operations. As a Cloud Engineer, you will lead operations, architecture and engineering across multiple cloud providers (Azure, AWS, GCP), defining and operating secure, scalable, and cost-effective cloud platforms and reference architectures for the Corporate division. You will partner closely with infrastructure and development teams to accelerate delivery through AI-enabled capabilities and automation, while ensuring strong GRCSP (governance, risk, compliance, security, and privacy) by design.
Your Team
You will be part of a global team distributed across India, USA, Mexico, and Europe - providing 24/7 cloud services.
What You Will Do
  • Own and evolve multi-cloud operations and collaborate in architecture (Azure, AWS, GCP), including target-state designs, reference architectures, and platform standards.
  • Drive cloud engineering decisions across providers: landing zones, networking, identity, compute, storage, observability, resiliency, and service catalog patterns.
  • Collaborate with other Cloud Operations team members to handle deploying and managing cloud resources in a multi-cloud environment.
  • Act as a business liaison for cloud: translate business objectives into technical roadmaps, and align stakeholders across infrastructure, application development, and security teams.
  • Enable AI and modern platform capabilities (e.g., data/AI services, MLOps patterns, secure access to foundation models) in collaboration with product and engineering teams.
  • Lead automation strategy and implementation for Cloud Operations using Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD (e.g., Terraform/CloudFormation/Bicep), policy-as-code, and self-service workflows.
  • Design and enforce GRCSP guardrails: governance frameworks, risk management, compliance requirements, security baselines, and privacy controls across all cloud platforms.
  • Establish cloud security architecture patterns (identity, encryption, network segmentation, secrets management) and partner with SOC/GRC teams to remediate findings.
  • Collaborate in architecture reviews for new initiatives and major changes; ensure designs meet non-functional requirements (availability, performance, security, compliance, operability, and cost).
  • Drive cost management and FinOps practices: tagging/chargeback models, unit economics, rightsizing, commitment programs, and architectural tradeoffs.
  • Partner with IT Operations on reliability and incident learnings (post-incident reviews, problem management), driving platform improvements and preventive controls.
  • Create and maintain cloud standards, blueprints, and documentation; provide guidance, workshops, and coaching to engineering teams to accelerate adoption.
  • Collaborate in defining and tracking a cloud architecture roadmap and key outcomes (security posture, compliance adherence, automation coverage, platform reliability, and cost efficiency) across the Corporate division.
  • Evaluate cloud services, security tooling, and automation platforms; make recommendations and guide implementation with a focus on standardization and reuse.
  • Build and report cloud posture metrics (GRCSP controls, audit readiness, security remediation progress, cost optimization, and automation maturity) to support decision-making.
  • Collaborate with a diverse, globally distributed team and communicate architecture decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.

What You Need
  • Master's degree or Bachelors degree with relevant experience in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field
  • 7+ years of experience in cloud engineering and architecture, with proven delivery on at least two major cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP).
  • Strong knowledge of cloud and platform architecture fundamentals: networking, DNS, load balancing, identity and access management, compute/container platforms, storage, and resilience patterns.
  • Hands-on experience designing for GRCSP: governance and policy controls, risk management, security architecture, privacy-by-design, and audit/compliance readiness in cloud environments.
  • Proficiency with AI integration with automation and Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, Bicep) and CI/CD practices; scripting skills (PowerShell, Python, or similar) preferred.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to bridge business needs and technical execution across infrastructure, development, and security teams.
