What is a patient observation virtual?

Patient Observation Virtual jobs involve remotely monitoring patients, typically in hospitals or care facilities, using video and audio technology. Professionals in these roles watch multiple patients via cameras to ensure their safety and quickly alert on-site staff if a patient needs assistance or is at risk of harm, such as falls or self-injury. This job supports the healthcare team by providing continuous observation, helping reduce incidents and improve patient outcomes while allowing staff to focus on other clinical duties.

How does a patient observation virtual collaborate with on-site healthcare staff to ensure patient safety?

In a Patient Observation Virtual role, you work closely with on-site nurses and clinical teams by monitoring patients remotely through video feeds and promptly communicating any concerning behaviors or incidents. Your observations are relayed via secure messaging or direct calls to the relevant staff, allowing immediate in-person intervention when necessary. This collaboration is vital in maintaining patient safety, especially for those at risk of falls or self-harm, and requires clear communication and a strong understanding of hospital protocols.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a patient observation virtual, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Patient Observation Virtual professional, you typically need a background in healthcare support, strong attention to detail, and familiarity with patient safety protocols. Experience with remote monitoring software, video surveillance systems, and secure communication platforms is essential. Excellent observation skills, clear communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring patient safety, promptly identifying risks, and effectively coordinating with onsite healthcare teams.

The 1E Med-Surg/Observation Unit at St. Anthony Hospital, one of our proud Magnet® designated hospitals, is a 22-bed department with a volume of more than 300 patients a month (usually 300 to 310). This unit is a new concept unit with a combination of both observation (14 beds) status and inpatient status (8 beds) patients. Our observation beds take a variety of patients requiring further time to be observed from the ED. If a patient needs further testing or monitoring and is not appropriate to stay in the ED, then our department will take them. Our top two diagnoses are chest pain and abdominal pain. We also accept patients that are sent from surrounding free standing EDs with the same criteria. When a patient requires care longer than 24-48 hours, we will transfer to an inpatient status and move to one of our inpatient beds or another inpatient unit in our hospital. The department's mission is to deliver safe quality care to every patient in a timely manner. Many join this team because they have an interest in emergency medicine. This department is a great place to solidify your med/surg skills, develop excellent time management and gain a better understanding of both emergency room patients and med/surg inpatients. You will have the opportunity to provide care to all types of patients and work alongside a mid-level provider (PA or NP) with every patient. We are a close-knit team with a solid positive team culture. We experience incredible opportunities to learn about many different disease processes with our patient population. Our goal is to help our team members achieve their nursing goals and help them attain education and or certification. We look for candidates who are open, willing to ask questions, flexible with schedule, able to see the broader picture and are fast learners. This is a very fast-paced department as we admit and discharge patients on every shift. Nurses who work here must be adaptable to change and willing to work hard as they will be very busy every shift on this unit.

Here, you will help advance modern nursing by providing your skills, experience, and commitment to compassionate care. The impact you will make in our faith-based, mission-driven culture will cultivate excellence and achieve professional fulfillment united in humankindness.

As a Registered Nurse (RN) you will assume responsibility and accountability for:

  • Facilitating, communicating, and collaborating with both the healthcare team, and the patient/family to identify and meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patient.
  • Promote the optimal health, well-being and safety of the patient through use of the nursing process and in accordance with patient care standards, guidelines and the State Nurse Practice Act.
  • Demonstrate personal accountability for relationship-based care, organizational mission, and core values.
