Job description

Hospital Patient Flow Coordinator

Discover. Achieve. Succeed. #BeHere

Be the clinical leader who keeps the hospital moving.

If you thrive in high-acuity environments, think three steps ahead, and enjoy influencing operations at a systems level β€” this role puts you at the center of it all.

As a Hospital Patient Flow Coordinator, you will lead real-time bed management and patient placement strategy across the organization. You'll collaborate with physicians, nursing leaders, admitting, and hospital administration to ensure patients are placed safely, efficiently, and appropriately.

This is not a task-based role β€” it's a hospital-wide position that directly impacts quality, safety, and throughput.

Why This Role Stands Out

β€’ High visibility across the organization

β€’ System-level impact on patient care and hospital operations

β€’ Autonomous decision-making authority

β€’ Close collaboration with executive and clinical leaders

β€’ Fast-paced, intellectually engaging work

β€’ Opportunity to influence capacity strategy

If you enjoy critical thinking, operational strategy, and clinical stewardship beyond the bedside β€” this is your next step.

What You'll Do

Lead Real-Time Patient Placement

β€’ Maintain situational awareness of all hospitals census, staffing levels, and bed availability

β€’ Utilize EPIC Bed Planning and surgical/ancillary schedules to guide strategic placement decisions

β€’ Develop and adjust daily admission plans based on real-time changes

Anticipate and Prevent Capacity Barriers

β€’ Monitor ED volumes, elective procedures, and clinic patterns to proactively predict bed demand

β€’ Coordinate hospital redirection and overcapacity status during high census periods

β€’ Partner with critical care and acute coordinators and unit leaders to anticipate admissions

Serve as the Central Liaison

β€’ Collaborate with Nurse Managers, Administrative Representatives, Physicians, Staffing Office, and Admitting

β€’ Facilitate in-house transfers while considering acuity, equipment, and disease management needs

β€’ Provide guidance on admission status and medical necessity for direct admits

Support Critical Events

β€’ Active participant on yearly hospital drills as well as statewide accountability for mass casualty events

β€’ Engage in high-stakes decision-making during capacity surges

Drive Quality & Process Improvement

β€’ Monitor patient placement metrics

β€’ Lead bed flow huddles

β€’ Contribute to updates in Allocation of Services guidelines

Who Thrives in This Role

This position is ideal for nurses who:

β€’ Has strong acute care or critical care backgrounds

β€’ Think system-wide, not just unit-based

β€’ Are calm and decisive in fast-paced environments

β€’ Enjoy collaboration and influencing outcomes

β€’ Want leadership impact without moving into a traditional manager role
