About the Job
Location: MedStar Georgetown University Hospital
Status: Full Time, 40 hours
Schedule: 3pm-11:30pm, Monday-Friday
General Summary of Position
The incumbent in this position ensures smooth flow of patients into and out of the department. Utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to communicating information between multiple levels within the organization. Provides significant support to the departmental staff by obtaining throughput and patient data and other medical information. Coordinates the supply chain for the department. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy policies procedures and standards.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coordinates and facilitates the flow of patients into and out of the department in a timely manner in coordination with the Charge Nurse.
  • Obtains lab data from computers for nursing and medical staff.
  • Logs patient orders into computer.
  • Obtains up-dates to daily OR schedule and communicates with appropriate personnel to maintain adequate information that affects departmental throughput.
  • Answers phone and communicates information to appropriate staff member.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of patient flow through the department including but not limited to entering data into hospital information systems.
  • Coordinates supply chain activities. This includes but is not limited to monitoring stock levels ordering/crediting and storing office supplies patient care supplies medical record forms/supplies and nutrition supplies.
  • Maintains and operates all office and communication equipment including but not limited fax machines printers telephones and computers. Initiate maintenance and repair orders to the appropriate personnel/department as necessary to maintain equipment in a functional state.
  • Coordinates with Health Information Management personnel for the safe storage within the department and return of appropriate medical record documents to HIM.
  • Notifies in conjunction with the Charge Nurse the appropriate department if service is needed for patient care equipment.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of unit departmental and organizational objectives.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and is not considered to be all-inclusive.

Minimal Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Associate's degree strongly preferred

Experience
  • 1-2 years Clerical experience in a fast-paced environment preferably a healthcare setting required.

Licenses and Certifications
  • N/A

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Medical/surgical terminology.
  • Experience working with multiple telephone lines; office skills including knowledge and operational use of automated systems basic computer skills and pneumatic tube system required.
  • Strong ability to maintain a professional demeanor and function at a high level in an often stressful environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Knowledge of PICIS is desirable.
