Job Description:

  • Performs accurate transcription of recorded medical dictation into designated report format to support pathologists, pathologists’ assistants, and selected laboratory departments.
  • Manages inventory control, general equipment and space maintenance, and receptionist/clerical tasks including word processing, filing, distribution of interoffice memos, mail, scanning, and faxing.
  • Supports cross-departmental partnerships and communication among pathologists, pathologists’ assistants, hospital staff, and clients, addressing and reporting any mistakes or errors to the department manager.
  • Provides resolution to customer service issues within established guidelines.
  • Attends and participates in scheduled department and committee meetings as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Responsible for proper function and minor troubleshooting of computer software and hardware used for transcription
• Technical skills and aptitudes related to timely and accurate transcription and delivery of pathology reports
• Excellent listening skills to accurately translate a variety of dialects in order to document detailed, complicated patient care
• Ability to read text and numbers and effectively communicate verbally and in written form in English with patients, staff, and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective, and professional manner utilizing excellent grammar, punctuation, and style skills
• Uses an extensive array of professional reference materials as well as the Internet
• Ability to learn and apply computer-related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices related to dictation and transcription
• Ability to work independently and handle confidential information with little or no supervision
• Must be able to read, write, and speak conversational English
• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office

• High School Grad or Equiv [Required]
• Technical/Vocational School [Required]
Field of Study:

Work Experience:
• 1+ experience in medical dictation transcription [Preferred]
