Position Summary:
The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University seeks a medical educator to teach primarily in the basic science curriculum during the first two years of the MD program and serve in other potential roles within the College. The basic science courses engage students in active, participatory learning that integrates medical knowledge, clinical skills, habits of self-directed learning, and diagnostic reasoning skills with a small group, problem-based learning (PBL) approach. Student activities include case-based discussions, workshops, lectures, and laboratory work. Our integrated basic science curriculum is structured by organ systems and clinical presentations, ensuring that basic sciences and clinical skills are concurrently taught during the first two years.
Essential duties for this position may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Create and present lectures and other educational sessions that meet established learning objectives and collaborate with course directors and faculty to ensure integration of material across courses.
- Serve as a facilitator for small group problem-based learning sessions and an instructor for applicable laboratory sessions.
- Assist with preparation and administration of exams and other assessments as requested.
- Participate in course grading committees and assist with course remediation as needed.
- Direct or co-direct one or more designated curriculum courses, threads, programs and/or content areas.
- Teach in other areas of the curriculum aligned with experience. Examples include classroom and small group teaching in the Year 1 and 2 Foundations of Medicine courses, the Year 3 Synthesis and Transition course and Academic Half-Day sessions, and the Year 4 Transition to Residency course.
- As opportunities arise, serve as an instructor in COM graduate programs in fields of expertise.
- Participate in faculty/facilitator meetings and faculty development sessions.
- Advise and mentor medical students as well as graduate students and residents, as applicable.
- Actively engage in continuous quality improvement efforts to ensure that the curriculum meets LCME accreditation standards.
- Serve on College of Medicine and University committees as required or requested.
- Conduct scholarly work related to medical education, applicable basic science or clinical disciplines, or another area of interest.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Terminal degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent degree) in a related basic science field or clinical discipline, such as Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathology, Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Microbiology, or Molecular Biology and credentials that merit appointment at the rank of assistant professor or higher.
• Candidates with an MD or equivalent degree may require a Florida medical license or qualifications for licensure and board certification, depending on scope of professional activities.
• Exceptional time management, the ability to be flexible, adaptable, and manage multiple demands and effectively communicate (oral and written) with a wide range of university stakeholders.
• Possess a high level of professionalism, independence and dependability.
Preferred Qualifications:
• A minimum of 3 years of experience teaching basic sciences at the undergraduate medical education level.
• Experience in curriculum development using innovative approaches to education, including use of educational technology.
• Expertise in assessment of learner performance.
• Experience directing a course or curriculum.
• A track record of scholarship including invited lectures, enduring materials, peer-reviewed publications and/or grant-funded projects.
• Experience with LCME accreditation or other accreditation organizations.
• Experience with quality improvement and educational program evaluation.
