Veterinary Pathology Laboratory Technician / Lab

Assistant

Location: Phoenix, Arizona (on-site) Job Type: [Full-time / Part-time] Compensation:

$17-25 per hour, depending on experience

Schedule: [e.g., Monday–Friday,  9-5 daytime hours]

About the Role

Our veterinary pathology laboratory provides histopathology and cytology diagnostic

services to veterinary clinics across the region. We are seeking a detail-oriented Laboratory

Technician / Lab Assistant to support the day-to-day operations of the lab and help us

deliver fast, accurate diagnostic results to the veterinarians and patients who depend on us.

This is a hands-on role for someone who takes pride in precision, works well in a fast-paced

diagnostic environment, and wants to be part of a small, collaborative team that directly

supports animal health.

Vet Path is a family owned-operated business. We are looking for family oriented person to fit well with the staff.

This is a fast paced office with many various responsibilites. Must be willing to learn all facets of all processes.

Key Responsibilities

Specimen Handling & Accessioning

Receive, log, label, and track incoming specimens from submitting veterinary clinics

Verify submission paperwork and enter case information into the laboratory information

System

Coordinate with couriers and manage sample shipping/receiving

Provide support with supplies sent out to vet clients, keep track of what they need, create forms, package items to be shipped out.

File glass slides in numerical order

Histopathology Support:

Process tissue specimens through cutting, fixation, dehydration, and paraffin embedding

Perform microtomy (sectioning tissue blocks) and mount sections onto slides

Carry out routine H&E staining, and assist with special stains and immunohistochemistry

as needed

Coverslip, label, and file completed slides and blocks

Cytology SupportPrepare and stain cytology samples (fine-needle aspirates, fluids, smears)

Set up slides and cases for pathologist review

Lab Operations & Quality

Prepare reagents and maintain inventory of lab supplies

Clean, maintain, and perform basic troubleshooting on lab equipment (tissue processor,

microtome, stainer, embedding station, cytocentrifuge)

Follow quality-control and quality-assurance procedures

Maintain a safe lab environment, including proper handling and disposal of formalin,

xylene, and biohazardous materials in compliance with OSHA and applicable regulations

Keep accurate records and assist with general administrative and clerical tasks as

Communication

Serve as a point of contact for submitting clinics regarding sample status and logistics

Support pathologists and lab leadership to keep cases moving efficiently

Handle phones quickly and professionally maintaining that family feel our clients are accustomed to.

Qualifications

Required:

High school diploma or equivalent

Strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and the ability to follow precise protocols

Comfort working with biological specimens and laboratory chemicals

Reliability, organization, and the ability to manage multiple cases under deadlines

Authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in biology, medical laboratory science,

histotechnology, or a related field

HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certification, or eligibility to obtain it

Prior experience in a histology, pathology, or diagnostic laboratory (veterinary

experience a strong plus)

Hands-on experience with microtomy, tissue processing, and staining

Familiarity with a laboratory information system (LIS)
