Job description

Position Summary

The Lab Assistant supports daily operations within a dermatopathology laboratory by assisting with specimen handling, preparation, administrative tasks, and maintaining a clean and efficient laboratory environment. This role is critical to ensuring accurate processing of skin biopsy samples and timely diagnostic workflow.


Key Responsibilities

Specimen Handling & Processing

  • Receive, accession, and label dermatology specimens (e.g., skin biopsies) accurately.
  • Verify patient information and ensure proper documentation of samples.
  • Assist in grossing preparation under supervision (e.g., cassette preparation).
  • Prepare specimens for histological processing, including embedding and slide labeling.

Laboratory Support

  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure proper functioning (routine cleaning and basic maintenance).
  • Prepare reagents, stains, and solutions as directed.
  • Assist histotechnologists and pathologists with slide management and organization.
  • Manage slide filing, retrieval, and archiving.

Quality & Compliance

  • Follow all laboratory protocols, safety procedures, and regulatory standards (CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA).
  • Ensure accurate record-keeping and data entry into laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of workspaces to meet infection control standards.

Administrative Tasks

  • Answer laboratory phone calls and coordinate with clinical staff as needed.
  • Track specimen flow and follow up on missing or delayed samples.
  • Assist with inventory management and ordering of lab supplies.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree in science preferred).
  • Prior laboratory or healthcare experience is a plus (especially pathology or dermatology).
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow strict procedures and maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in histology or pathology lab environments.
