Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The Pathology Lab Assistant is responsible for organizing, and prepping slides; as well as maintaining proper documentation, equipment and supplies needed for the pathology lab.
REPORTS TO: Pathology Lab Manager
RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens received, and ensures correct labeling of all materials
  • Completes sorting and accessioning of pathology specimens
  • Initiates daily grossing log (To include patient name, accession#, and slide protocol notes)
  • Prepares specimen cassettes for each specimen
  • Prepares and organizes slides for distribution to the Pathologist
  • Identifies problems and brings to the attention of more senior laboratory staff. Troubleshoots with supervision
  • Responding to endoscopy center and physician requests related to pathology
  • Filing and inventorying patient slides and blocks
  • Managing lab supply inventory
  • Maintaining lab equipment through upkeep, quality control checks, and logs
  • Participates in continuing education/in-service training sessions
  • Maintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including the areas of quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control
  • Follows all CLIA, OSHA and other regulatory requirements
  • Any other duties and special projects as assigned

REQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED required; working knowledge of biology, chemistry, histology, immunology, and mathematics is required; 1 year of clinical experience in the pathology setting preferred; 1 year of experience working with CLIA regulatory requirements is a plus. Pathology Lab Assistant must be computer literate and able to operate multiple Microsoft Office applications.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Pathology Lab Assistant must be able to:
  • Communicate with patients, co-workers, physicians, and others in a courteous and professional manner, through the telephone, email, and in-person
  • Must have excellent organizational skills to execute a wide variety of lab techniques accurately and expeditiously
  • Work and make decisions independently, when dealing with specimens and their proper handling, based on organization guidelines/policies, laws and regulations
  • Plan, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks as delegated by UD leadership

PHYSICAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment; ability to work 2nd and 3rd shift hours required. Travel as business needs require
