What is a Patent Associate?

A Patent Associate is a legal professional, often with a technical or scientific background, who assists in preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications. They work under the supervision of patent attorneys or agents and help clients secure protection for their inventions. Patent Associates conduct prior art searches, draft patent specifications, respond to office actions from patent offices, and may provide technical expertise in patent litigation or portfolio management. Their role is critical in ensuring that inventions are properly described and legally protected according to intellectual property laws.

What is the difference between Patent Associate vs Patent Agent?

AspectPatent AssociatePatent Agent

Work EnvironmentLaw firms, corporate legal departments, patent law firmsPatent law firms, corporate legal departments, patent agencies
Employer & Industry UsageLegal professionals, law firms, corporationsPatent law firms, patent agencies, corporations

Patent Associates typically hold a law degree and pass the Patent Bar exam, working in legal settings to draft and prosecute patents. Patent Agents usually have a technical degree and pass the Patent Bar but do not hold a law degree, focusing on patent prosecution in law firms or patent agencies. Both roles require passing the Patent Bar and work closely with patent applications, but Patent Associates often have broader legal responsibilities.

What are some common challenges Patent Associates face when working with inventors and research teams?

Patent Associates often encounter challenges in translating complex technical concepts from inventors and research teams into clear, legally robust patent applications. Effective communication is key, as they must bridge the gap between technical experts and legal requirements, ensuring all inventive aspects are accurately captured and protected. Additionally, managing tight deadlines and balancing multiple projects simultaneously is common, requiring strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Collaboration with inventors, attorneys, and sometimes clients is frequent, making teamwork and adaptability essential in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Patent Associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Patent Associate, you need a solid understanding of patent law, technical expertise in a scientific or engineering discipline, and a relevant degree—often paired with passing the patent bar exam. Familiarity with patent filing systems, prior art search databases, and docketing software is typically required. Exceptional analytical thinking, written communication, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills for drafting and prosecuting patent applications. These capabilities ensure accurate, high-quality patent submissions and effective protection of clients' intellectual property.

Job description

Relay is transforming the physical world into a searchable, actionable data asset. We've moved beyond "Big Radio's" analog past to build the Relay SOAR™ Platform, which treats voice and movement as the new keyboards of the enterprise. By capturing the "Human Signal," we enable frontline teams in hospitality, manufacturing, and healthcare to move from reactive chaos to proactive control.
Ranked among the fastest-growing tech companies in North America, we are looking for the next generation of "Relayers" to help us digitize the final frontier of the workforce.
Why Join Relay?
  • Work at the Edge of Innovation: We just secured our 100th patent. You'll work with technologies spanning AI-driven noise suppression, real-time language translation, and advanced IoT connectivity.
  • Massive Scale: Be part of a platform that processes over 1 billion data points every week. Our tech isn't just "cool"-it's essential infrastructure for the global economy.
  • LIT Culture (Learning, Impact, Teamwork): We pride ourselves on an environment where early-career professionals have a seat at the table and see their work impact global brands immediately.
  • Hyper-Growth Trajectory: With high growth and new C-suite leaders who have led successful IPOs, you are joining a rocket ship at the perfect time.
  • Best-in-Class Perks: Based in our high-tech Raleigh headquarters, you'll enjoy 100% company-paid benefits, a 401(k) match, and a hybrid work model that balances flexibility with high-energy collaboration.

Ready to help us build the Intelligent System of Action?
Relay, a dynamic and rapidly growing tech startup based in Raleigh, is on a mission to revolutionize frontline work. For decades, technology has supercharged the desk worker while leaving behind the 80% of the global workforce who don't sit at a desk. The result is a staggering 90% productivity gap between information workers and frontline teams. At Relay, our mission is to close this gap by building the Intelligent System of Action that helps frontline teams SOAR. We're building tools that meet frontline workers where they are, capturing tribal knowledge, and turning communication into action. By leveraging our connected cloud ecosystem and AI, we empower these essential teams to communicate more effectively, work more safely, and operate more productively.
The products you will help define and deliver customer-facing products designed to empower our frontline workers.
Job Overview:
As an Associate Product Manager (APM) at Relay, you will help define and deliver products that drive our business forward. You'll partner closely with engineering, and cross-functional stakeholders to ship features that delight customers and accelerate Relay's growth.
You will act as the crucial bridge between our engineering team and the rest of the business-translating customer needs, market signals, and stakeholder input into clear, well-framed problems for engineering to solve. This is a hands-on role designed for someone who thrives at the intersection of technology, customer empathy, and business impact. You'll have meaningful ownership from day one and will be encouraged to leverage AI and automation to push the boundaries of what our products can do. This role will be based full time in person in our Raleigh, NC headquarters.
Our Product Philosophy:
At Relay, Product Management is rarely about having all the answers; it is about having the most complete context, maintaining discipline, and acting as the steady hand that guides our teams forward. In this role, you will be expected to:
  • Provide Context, Not Just Tasks: You will not simply hand over a list of stakeholder requests. You will deliver well-framed, clearly articulated problems to Engineering, ensuring they know not just what we are building, but the clear rationale behind why it matters right now.
  • Own the Stakeholder Friction: When issues arise, you will absorb and resolve them. You will understand the technical constraints of your product area well enough to solve issues directly with stakeholders, rather than bringing raw, unfiltered issues to the engineering team.
  • Be a Calming, Decisive Presence: You will act as a buffer against competing demands, ensuring you do not bring chaos, panic, or unnecessary urgency to engineering.
  • Contribute to Global Optimization: You will synthesize business objectives and technical constraints and surface your recommendations to product leadership so they can globally optimize and prioritize across all engineering work streams, cutting through the organizational noise to determine the highest and best use of the team's time.
What You Will Do:
Product Strategy & Delivery
  • Drive the roadmap for your product area, collaborating with Engineering to deliver viable, high-impact products and ensure timely, high-quality delivery.
  • Write detailed user stories for both new features and product enhancements.
  • Participate actively in sprint planning and stand-ups, ensuring clarity and momentum throughout the delivery process.
Customer & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Develop a deep understanding of your users-whether external customers or internal teams-through interviews, data analysis, and direct engagement.
  • Document, analyze, and prioritize feedback through structured discovery work and review of feedback channels.
  • Represent the voice of the customer in sprint planning and product reviews to ensure that business and user goals remain aligned.
  • Drive product adoption and enablement by developing clear release notes, training materials, and alignment sessions with go-to-market and customer-facing teams.
AI & Automation Integration
  • Collaborate with our engineering team to fine tune models that harness our proprietary data sources and durable customer value.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to leverage AI/ML to enhance our products, derive deeper insights, and unlock new value for users.
What You Will Bring to This Role:
  • 0-3 years of experience in Product Management, preferably within an enterprise software or SaaS environment.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Business, Econ, Computer Science, or related technical or field.
  • A strong blend of business and technical acumen, with the ability to engage meaningfully and add value in discussions encompassing both technology and business strategy.
  • Curiosity about emerging technologies: A keen interest in staying abreast of cutting-edge technologies, particularly within the AI and automation space, and identifying how they can create new value for users.
  • A passion for entrepreneurship with the ability to thrive and react proactively to changing business needs within a dynamic, high-growth startup environment.
  • A builder mindset and eagerness to roll up their sleeves and defeat inertia to create customer value
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships across internal teams and stakeholders.
