Job description

The mission of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is to spread the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world.  In the faithful pursuit of this mission, the archdiocese is seeking a Bookkeeper/Accountant for our Parish. This role reports to the pastor and performs all bookkeeping, accounting, for the parish, The duties and responsibilities of the Bookkeeper/Accountant are performed in concert with a parish office staff and other parish centers of operation.

Job Duties:  

  • Understand and determine compliance with archdiocese requirements for parish accounting and internal controls
  • Troubleshoot issues at a parish via inquiry, analysis, and research
  • Provide consulting and assistance on accounting procedures to Pastors
  • Prepare recurring and ad hoc financial reporting of parish financial results and various issues for the Pastor and Manager
  • Proactively identify changes to accounting policy and procedures to mitigate risk
  • Process accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll
  • Produce monthly and annual financial statements and manage financial operations and internal controls.

Knowledge, skills and Abilities

  • Full understanding and appreciation of the mission of the Catholic Church
  • Accrual accounting and internal accounting controls
  • Organizational skills and capacity to learn and recall business and accounting issues across multiple parish entities
  • Professional poise and judgment to raise and discuss issues, as necessary, with the Manager and various parish personnel (Pastor, business manager)
  • Collaborative and friendly work style to interact with other archdiocesan groups, e.g., internal audit, Catholic Schools Office

Education, Training and/or Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Business, Accounting, or related field is strongly preferred, but not required
  • Experience in Accounting or Bookkeeping role in a professional office setting.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Experience in Accounting software and ability to learn new technologies.
  • Experience in preparation of financial reporting and analysis for discussion and decision making
  • Proficient in MS Excel, Word
  • Computer aptitude to learn the parish accounting systems, CMS and Microsoft Dynamics GP

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, printers and filing cabinets.
