What is a Pastor Parsonage?

A pastor parsonage is a residence provided by a church or religious organization for its pastor or minister. The parsonage is typically located near or on the church property and serves as the pastor's home during their term of service. Providing a parsonage is a common practice, especially in smaller church communities, as it helps support the pastor by reducing living expenses and allowing them to be close to their congregation. The use and maintenance of the parsonage are often governed by church policies and may have tax implications for both the church and the pastor.

What are some common challenges pastors face when living in a parsonage, and how can they maintain work-life balance?

Pastors who reside in a parsonage often find that maintaining boundaries between their personal and professional lives can be challenging, as the home may be viewed as an extension of the church. This can lead to frequent interruptions and a sense of being 'always on call.' To manage this, pastors are encouraged to set clear boundaries with church members, designate private family spaces, and schedule regular time off. Open communication with the congregation about respect for personal time can also help ensure a healthy work-life balance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pastor Parsonage, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pastor, you need a strong foundation in theology, pastoral care, and leadership, typically supported by a divinity degree or equivalent ministry training. Familiarity with church management software, biblical study tools, and counseling certifications is often expected. Exceptional interpersonal skills, empathy, and effective communication are vital for building relationships and guiding congregants. These skills ensure spiritual guidance, community cohesion, and the effective management of church operations.

Fellowship Alliance Chapel Church Profile

Fellowship Alliance Chapel (FAC) seeks an experienced Senior Pastor to lead our established congregation of 1,200+ in Medford, New Jersey. This role offers the opportunity to build upon 40+ years of ministry while providing strategic leadership through facility stewardship and growth.

Position Overview: The Senior Pastor will provide primary preaching and teaching, lead strategic planning, oversee 20+ staff, and partner closely with the elder board on major organizational initiatives including debt reduction and facility optimization. The ideal candidate values collaborative leadership and thrives in a team-oriented governance environment.

Leadership Structure: The Senior Pastor serves in collaborative partnership with a plurality of elders who provide governance oversight and spiritual guidance. This team-based leadership model emphasizes mutual accountability, shared decision-making, and unified vision casting.

Our church is a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance with an annual operating budget of ~$4M. FAC stewards multiple buildings on campus plus a lake/summer day camp. Our ministry includes family support, extensive adult/children/youth programs, care ministries, and missions. Trinity Preparatory Christian School leases our facilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Seminary education or equivalent ministry preparation

  • Minimum 7-10 years senior pastoral experience

  • Strong expository preaching and teaching abilities

  • Demonstrated leadership in staff management and organizational development

  • Experience with financial stewardship and capital campaigns preferred

  • Christian & Missionary Alliance ordination required (or willingness to obtain)

  • Theological alignment with evangelical and C&MA beliefs

We would consider candidates with theological beliefs compatible with our Alliance heritage who have served in other independent or evangelical fellowships.

Location: Located in Medford, New Jersey (45 minutes from Philadelphia, 60 minutes from Jersey shore), FAC serves professionals and families across southern New Jersey's townships with excellent schools and diverse neighborhoods.

FAC is a single-site, multigenerational congregation committed to helping more people live Jesus-centered and missionally engaged lives. A recent campus building project positions us well for continued growth.

Financial Context: FAC maintains strong financial position with recent land acquisitions requiring strategic debt management. The Senior Pastor will collaborate with the Finance Committee and Board of Elders on stewardship initiatives.

Compensation: Comprehensive package including salary ($100,000-$150,000), benefits, retirement contributions, and parsonage housing option.
