Department: Transportation

Reports To: Residential Living Director
FLSA: Non-Exempt

Schedule: Monday-Friday, rotating daylight shifts; start times between 7:00-9:00 AM and end times between 3:30-6:00 PM. Starting pay will vary based on job-related skills, experience, and qualifications  

Job Summary

The Transportation Assistant is responsible for providing safe, dependable, and timely transportation for residents on and off campus, as well as assisting with campus mail distribution. This position provides professional, hospitality-focused service to residents, families, guests, and team members while supporting Sunnyside's mission of Inspiring a Spirit of Community and Well-Being.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Basic reading, writing, and math skills.
  • Proficiency in operating a personal computer and general office equipment.
  • Ability to accurately process information, make appropriate decisions, and take effective action based on available information.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license and ability to meet driver eligibility requirements in accordance with Sunnyside policy HR069.
  • CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain certification.
  • Ability to handle confidential information and maintain its integrity.
  • Strong customer service skills with a hospitality-focused approach when engaging with residents, families, and team members.
Essential Job Duties
  • Transport residents and passengers to scheduled medical appointments and other destinations as needed.
  • Safely operate all Sunnyside vehicles, including wheelchair buses, vans, and passenger vehicles.
  • Follow all applicable driving laws and organizational road safety procedures.
  • Provide timely campus shuttle services while adhering to designated schedules.
  • Transport residents to various locations, including shopping trips, and maintain accountability for all passengers.
  • Assist with resident shopping when needed, responsibly managing allotted funds and submitting receipts to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
  • Respond to medical emergencies calmly and professionally during transport.
  • Maintain a professional representation of Sunnyside at all times.
  • Follow vehicle accident policy RS.047 promptly if involved in an accident.
  • Perform weekly vehicle inspections in accordance with department checklists and submit work orders as needed.
  • Communicate with the Transportation Manager regarding appointments to ensure efficient scheduling and minimize delays.
  • Perform bank-related duties, ensuring accurate handling of money and receipts.
  • Sort and distribute incoming mail and newspapers.
  • Coordinate and schedule medical appointments for residents as needed.
  • Provide coverage for the front desk/lobby as needed.
  • Provide gate coverage for breaks, lunches, and open shifts as required.
  • Keep ambulance entrance free of debris.
  • Maintain golf carts monthly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. The role frequently requires sitting, standing, reaching, lifting, bending, kneeling, stooping, climbing, pushing, and pulling items weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally more than 75 pounds. The position also requires frequent driving, manual dexterity, auditory and visual acuity, and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
