Job description

Terms of Employment
This is a 9 month position for 7 hours/day (plus 1/2 hour unpaid lunch). This position is eligible for health benefits.
Purpose
Provides both direct and indirect support to promote student learning in the special education and general education settings as directed by the special needs teacher(s). Prepares the necessary instructional materials according to the teacher's direction to implement individual education programs (IEP). Attends community based instructional activities to assist students in building life skills/vocational skills. Implements behavior intervention plans (BIP) when necessary. May assist with and care for personal needs of students, including bathroom assistance, diapering, feeding and changing. Additionally, may provide assistance with physical transitions into wheelchairs, physical therapist equipment and/or on and off the bus. Other responsibilities as needed and determined by the Special Education Office.
Qualifications
Completion of two years of study (60+ hours) at an institution of higher education or possession of an associate's (or higher) degree is preferred. Previous experience as a classroom assistant desirable. Candidates must have a sincere interest in working with students in the learning process. Effective communication skills. Ability to take direction. Initiative and dependability in carrying out assignments. Patience and genuine interest in education of students. Awareness and respect for student diversity. Clerical skills, flexibility and confidentiality required. Training for this position may be implemented upon hiring. Must be able to lift 50+ pounds. A lift test will be required. May be required to drive a special education van with students as passengers (2-6 students) with additional adult supervision.
