Job Summary
The University of Michigan Law School is seeking to hire an Adjunct Clinical Professor to administer and teach our Geneva International Fellows Program. The position is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and involves some travel to the United States. This is a part-time position (approximately .4 FTE).
The Geneva International Fellows Program is a 14-credit course that takes place January-May and combines field placements with leading international organizations (IOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Geneva with a contemporaneous seminar intended to provide substantive context for the externships. The program provides Michigan Law students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of public international law, the role and function of IOs and NGS, the practice of various specialty areas in the international context as well as to develop professional and lawyering skills.
The Adjunct Clinical Professor is responsible for helping to recruit, select, and orient students to the program; helping students secure their field placements in Geneva; assisting students with visa entry requirements, etc., helping students adjust to life in Geneva; following the work of students in their field placements (including through liaison with the students' supervisors), serving as their primary contact in Geneva, and organizing a 2-credit course for the students during the winter semester.
This is a two-year contract with the preponderance of the work taking place during the period from early January until early May, while the Michigan students are in residence in Geneva.
Responsibilities Include:
- Managing all aspects of the University of Michigan Law School's Geneva International Fellows Program;
- Identifying potential placement sites and liaising with IOs and NGOs to facilitate externship placements;
- Working with students to select placement choices, draft application materials, field administrative questions, and advocating with placement sites for their hiring;
- Teaching the accompanying Michigan Law Geneva International Fellows seminar, focusing on key areas such as international law, human rights, global governance, and experiential learning. - Evaluating student performance during externships and in the seminar through regular assessments.
Required Qualifications*
The qualified candidate should:
- Hold a J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school, though consideration may be given to those with equivalent exposure to U.S. legal education;
- Have a deep understanding of the Geneva international community the IOs (in particular UN agencies), NGOs, diplomatic missions, and adjacent legal community including knowledge of the substantive mandate, institutional organization, and bureaucratic (in particular human resource-related) workings of these institutions and offices within them;
- Have experience teaching law students;
- Have deep familiarity with U.S. legal education through time spent in the United States or equivalent exposure.
