What are part-time jobs?

Part-time jobs are positions in which employees work fewer hours per week than full-time employees, typically less than 35-40 hours. These jobs often offer more flexible schedules, making them ideal for students, parents, or anyone needing to balance work with other commitments. Part-time roles can be found in a variety of industries, such as retail, food service, healthcare, and administration. Benefits and pay may vary compared to full-time positions, and some part-time jobs may not offer benefits like health insurance or paid time off.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time worker, and why are they important?

Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, scheduling software, or other job-specific tools is often beneficial. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork are valuable soft skills that help part-time employees integrate quickly into existing teams. These skills and qualities are important because part-time roles often require flexibility and the ability to contribute effectively within limited hours.

To overcome these, it's helpful to communicate availability clearly, proactively seek feedback, and express interest in professional development opportunities. Job description

Part-Time General Laborer

Cedar Rapids, IA

Pay: $20/hour | Job Type: Part-time (less than 20 hours per week)

About Skogman Remodeling & Repair

Formerly known as D&B Remodeling and HRT Remodeling & Repair, Skogman Remodeling & Repair has earned a reputation for quality craftsmanship, integrity, and exceptional customer service throughout Eastern Iowa.

The Opportunity

Skogman Remodeling & Repair is looking for a Part-Time General Laborer to support our crews with trailer transport and general labor on residential remodeling projects in the Cedar Rapids area. This is flexible, supplemental work — a good fit if you're looking for extra income and don't need a set number of hours every week.

Schedule: This is on-call work — hours vary week to week based on project needs. Some weeks may have little to no work; other weeks may require time each day. You'll know your schedule for the upcoming week by Friday, so you can plan around it. Recent averages have run about 12-16 hours/week.

No benefits are offered with this position, but you'll be provided a company vehicle to drive while on the clock and Skogman Remodeling & Repair attire — no wear and tear on your own vehicle or clothes.

What You'll Do

  • Hook up, pull, and safely back trailers to and from job sites
  • Provide general labor support on remodeling and repair projects
  • Clock in/out and communicate availability using time clock apps on your smartphone
  • Assist crews with material transport, site prep, and cleanup as needed

What You'll Need (Required)

  • Valid driver's license and current auto insurance
  • Ability to hook up, pull, and back a trailer
  • Comfortable performing general labor and construction-related tasks, including lifting, carrying, and working outdoors
  • A smartphone for time clock and communication apps
  • Reliable transportation to and from the job site or shop

Preferred (Not Required)

  • Any construction or remodeling experience
  • Familiarity with hand tools
