What are part-time jobs?

Part-time jobs are positions in which employees work fewer hours per week than full-time employees, typically less than 35-40 hours. These jobs often offer more flexible schedules, making them ideal for students, parents, or anyone needing to balance work with other commitments. Part-time roles can be found in a variety of industries, such as retail, food service, healthcare, and administration. Benefits and pay may vary compared to full-time positions, and some part-time jobs may not offer benefits like health insurance or paid time off.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a part-time worker, you generally need reliability, time management, a willingness to learn, and the relevant educational or experience requirements for the specific role. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, scheduling software, or other job-specific tools is often beneficial. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork are valuable soft skills that help part-time employees integrate quickly into existing teams. These skills and qualities are important because part-time roles often require flexibility and the ability to contribute effectively within limited hours.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time employees, and how can they overcome them?

Part-time employees often face challenges such as limited access to benefits, inconsistent scheduling, and fewer opportunities for advancement compared to full-time staff. To overcome these, it's helpful to communicate availability clearly, proactively seek feedback, and express interest in professional development opportunities. Building strong relationships with colleagues and supervisors can also lead to greater flexibility and consideration for future full-time roles. Staying organized and adaptable is key to balancing work with other commitments.

Job description

Cashier & Customer Support

We are hiring for part-time cashier and customer support roles working in the store. Friday through Sunday are our busiest days, and strong front-end coverage is essential.

This position is for Friday through Monday, and availability for most or all of these days is ideal.

If you enjoy working with people, staying active, and being part of a team, this is a great fit.

What You’ll Do
  • Operate the register and keep lines moving during busy periods
  • Greet customers and create a positive experience
  • Help direct customers to the right areas of the store
  • Support the team wherever needed throughout the day
What We’re Looking For
  • Availability on weekends, especially Friday–Sunday
  • Positive attitude and comfort working with customers
  • Willingness to jump in and help without being asked
  • Team-oriented and eager to learn
What You’ll Get
  • Consistent scheduling you can count on
  • Early evening hours — no late nights
  • A strong, team-focused environment
  • An active role that goes by quickly

Our stores get busy on weekends as customers work on their homes and projects—this is a great role for someone who enjoys being part of that energy.

Our Story

Our story began in 2006, when the Dowdell and Shellenberg families partnered to purchase three Ace Hardware stores in Livingston, Butte, and Anaconda, Montana. From the beginning, the vision was bigger than simply operating great hardware stores: we wanted to be the best employer in the communities we serve.

Since then, we’ve grown from three stores to five, expanding into Northwest Montana with Glacier Ace Hardware in Evergreen and Columbia Falls Ace Hardware. While our footprint has grown, our commitment has stayed the same. We are proud to be a Montana-owned and operated company focused on creating a positive experience for our employees, customers, and communities.

Our culture is built around three core values:

  • Own It
  • Be a Great Teammate
  • Go the Extra Mile

These values guide how we work, how we treat one another, and how we serve our customers. We believe our people are what make our stores special, and we want to create a workplace where employees can contribute, grow, take pride in their work, and make a positive impact in their communities.

Today, our five stores serve Livingston, Butte, Anaconda, Evergreen, and Columbia Falls, and we’re proud to be part of the Ace Hardware family. Ace combines the strength and resources of a nationally recognized brand with the independence and local ownership that allow us to stay connected to the communities we call home.

We’ve grown a lot since 2006, but our mission remains the same: we are here to positively impact our employees, customers and communities.

Ace Hardware is a nationally recognized brand built on a cooperative model that has been serving communities since 1924. Unlike a traditional corporate chain, Ace Hardware stores are independently owned and operated by local business owners who work together as part of the Ace cooperative. This model gives local owners the ability to make decisions based on the needs of their customers, employees, and communities while benefiting from the strength, resources, and recognition of the Ace brand.
Timberline Ace has five locally owned and operated stores, led by teams who know and care about the communities we serve. While the Ace name is recognized nationwide, our stores are independently operated by two Montana families (the Dowdells and Shellenbergs), giving us the freedom to make decisions that are right for our customers, employees, and communities.
Locally owned. Nationally known.
