Love swimming? Love working with kids?
Come be a swim instructor at the Downtown Berkeley YMCA and teach children how to be safe in, on, and around the water!
NO CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED. We will train you. However, you must be able to demonstrate an ability to swim in shallow and deep water, and tread water (Minnow or ARC Level 4 Swimming Level).
We are currently hiring part-time lifeguards and/or swim instructors. We are looking for adaptable, reliable, energetic individuals who can work 5-25 hours/week in a fast-paced, diverse environment.
We are currently looking for swim instructor applicants with availability: Mon/Wed afternoons (4:00-7pm), T/TH afternoons (4:00-7pm), and/or Saturdays (9:45am-2:00pm). We are currently prioritizing applicants with weekday availability. Starting in June, weekday shifts will be Mon-Th (4:00-7pm).
We are seeking enthusiastic and experienced aquatics staff to provide our members with a safe, clean, fun and therapeutic aquatic environment. We believe that swimming is an essential skill for all ages and staff provide essential support for children and adults to achieve their personal goals.
POSITION SUMMARY:
These general functions will be carried out in keeping with the Goals, Policies and Mission of the YMCA of the East Bay. Provide direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes. Promote safety, self-confidence, a healthy lifestyle and member involvement.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Instruct swimming lessons using age appropriate methods in accordance with YMCA curriculum.
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; help them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourage parent involvement and identify potential volunteers.
  • Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records as required.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organize and put away needed class equipment.
  • Support special events, assist in other areas, and perform other duties as required.
  • Train and supervise class aides as assigned.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification and Emergency Oxygen
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards
  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent
  • At least 16 years of age
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook and other computer programs necessary to perform the duties of the job

COMPENSATION:
  • $23.50-24.25 DOE
