Job description

PT Temporary Keeper - Commissary
The Commissary Department is looking for a qualified current Zoo employee to join their team as a part-time, temporary Commissary Keeper.
Key position details:
  • This is a part-time, temporary position, not eligible for medical benefits.
  • Scheduled hours will be Monday - Friday, from 7:00AM-1:00PM
  • Pay rate is $22.27/hour (Keeper 1)
  • A 30-day layoff period will occur during the calendar year, in accordance with the union contract. The timing of such layoffs will be at the discretion of the zoo, based on what's best for the operation of the Commissary.
  • This position requires the deduction of union dues.

Position Summary: This position receives deliveries of animal food and prepares the daily animal dietary requirements for delivery to the holding areas throughout the park. The responsibilities include but are not limited to maintaining a clean work area for the preparation of food, preparing animal nutrition; delivering the animal food; truck(s) upkeep and maintenance; and maintaining a clean work area within the hay barn. This position requires a person to be detail-oriented and able to complete certain tasks within an allotted period. In addition, the truck driving responsibilities may require driving both inside and outside the Zoo.
Desired Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Commissary keepers have a unique role in providing service to many areas of the zoo and must possess and utilize excellent communication, customer service skills and efficient use of their time
  • This position requires a person to be detail-oriented and able to complete certain tasks within an allotted period
  • Truck driving responsibilities may require driving both inside and outside the Zoo.
  • It is imperative this person demonstrate a positive attitude that provides vision and opportunities for individuals and the Zoo to grow.
  • Must pass a fit-for-duty physical exam (paid by the Zoo) prior to being officially placed in the position
  • Must become forklift & bobcat certified within 60 days of appointment
  • Must be able to drive trucks with an automatic transmission
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be insurable through the Zoo's auto/equipment polic

Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; climb or balance; grasp; and negotiate stairs and ladders. Employee must also be able to safely operate equipment including Zoo vehicles (trucks and forklift), Commissary equipment and devices, such as bone saw, knives, stoves, pallet jacks, etc. In addition, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and must be able to lift/move/carry 50-100 pounds on a routine basis.
