Job description

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:                                                                                             

Responsible for planning and instructing programs of competitive and non-competitive gymnastics designed to meet the needs of the community. Performs related duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Develops course curriculum. 
  • Instructs patrons in artistic gymnastics using varied gymnastic equipment. 
  • Program responsibilities include but are not limited to events prescribed by USA Gymnastics. 
  • Instructs men and women in individual gymnastic skills including pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, horizontal bar, balance beam, tumbling and floor exercise. 
  • Develops and instructs pre-school gymnastics program. 
  • Responsible for instructing and coaching all competitive gymnastic events including apparatus and floor exercises, at all levels of USA Gymnastics. 
  • Promotes events, programs and classes. 
  • Judges all levels of competition at the recreational level. 
  • Helps ensure availability and safety of equipment and facilities. 
  • Performs clerical tasks including course registration, fee collection, equipment inventory and record keeping.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience:
Three years' experience as a gymnast, including at least 2 years of USA Gymnastics or N.C.A.A. recognized competition required. Professional membership in USA Gymnastics must be obtained within 60 days of employment. 

Certifications Required: Valid USA Gymnastics Safety Certification within 60 days of employment. Safe Sport certification within 60 days of employment. Must be able to physically assist/physically support athletes who are 30-100 lbs. Must be able to move equipment and mats between 5-60 lbs.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  Knowledge of rules, regulations and practices of USA Gymnastics. Knowledge of gymnastic exercises, events and tricks prescribed by USA Gymnastics. Knowledge of tumbling and floor exercises for men's and women's events. Effective teaching and coaching skills. 

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  At least 1 year of gymnastic coaching experience.

As a part-time Chicago Park District employee in a position covered by the District's Agreement with SEIU Local 73, eligible employees receive a comprehensive benefits package including: 

  • +$1/hour on 1/1/2027  
  • 1 day of personal leave at the commencement of each quarter, accrued on a pro rata basis.
  • 2 days of sick leave at the commencement of each quarter, accrued on a pro rata basis.
  • After one year of employment, employees who work 1040 hours or more in the previous year are typically eligible for between 7-10 workdays of paid vacation time annually (additional time after first 5 years of employment).
  • 12 weeks of paid parental leave (upon meeting FMLA eligibility)
  • Pension plan through the Park Employees' and Retirement Board Employees' Annuity and Benefit Fund, a system covered by the State of Illinois' Reciprocal Act.
