Join us as a Scientific and Medical Editor supporting the development of high-quality scientific, medical, and technical communications. In this role, you'll transform complex scientific and medical information into clear, accurate, and publication ready materials that support researchers, clinicians, leadership, and program stakeholders.

Location: Joint Pathology Center, 606 Stephen Sitter Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910

Position Description: The Scientific & Medical Editor provides advisory and technical editorial support for a variety of written products, which may include reports, manuscripts, briefings, correspondence, presentations, white papers, executive summaries, abstracts, technical documents, and publication-ready materials. The editor will review scientific and medical terminology, document organization, grammar, syntax, style, references, citations, and overall readability for intended audiences. This position is part-time.

Minimum/General Experience: 5 years of science and medical editorial experience

Minimum Education: Bachelors Degree in information technology, communication, health sciences, business administration, or related field

Essential Skills/Qualifications:

  • Above average experience editing and reviewing scientific and medical communications
  • Above average experience supporting and editing manuscripts, technical documents, briefings, and presentations
  • Above average experience improving clarity, organization, readability, and consistency of scientific and medical materials
  • Above average experience reviewing scientific and medical content for accuracy, terminology, and alignment with references
  • Experience supporting publication-ready materials, peer review, and external submissions
  • Knowledge of style guides, citation formats, and document standards
  • Experience supporting a federal agency
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

General Physical Requirements needed to perform the essential functions of this job may vary based on the location of the assignment.

  • Assignment Location - Joint Pathology Center, 606 Stephen Sitter Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910
  • Sedentary Work - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Typing, communicating, repetitive motions.
  • Close visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, view computer monitors and read. May need to view presentation screens and other visual aids in a virtual setting.
  • Inside environmental conditions with protection from outside elements.

Security: Active DoD Secret Clearance; Ability to obtain DoD Top Secret Clearance as needed

  • Provides part-time scientific and medical editing support for assigned reports, manuscripts, briefings, correspondence, presentations, and other technical documents
  • Edits content for clarity, grammar, syntax, organization, consistency, and professional presentation
  • Ensures scientific and medical information is clearly written and tailored to the intended audience
  • Reviews draft technical and medical documents to improve structure, flow, readability, and logical organization
  • Identifies areas requiring clarification, revision, or reorganization to strengthen overall document quality
  • Recommends edits that improve the effectiveness and usability of written products
  • Reviews scientific and medical content for terminology, consistency, and alignment with references provided and supporting documentation
  • Identifies apparent discrepancies, ambiguities, unsupported statements, or inconsistencies and elevate them for author or stakeholder review
  • Supports the preparation of clear, accurate, and technically sound written materials
  • Ensure documents conform to applicable organizational, editorial, publication, and formatting requirements
  • Applies approved style guides, templates, citation formats, and document standards as directed
  • Standardizes terminology, abbreviations, references, tables, figures, and formatting across deliverables
  • Provides editorial support for manuscripts, abstracts, journal articles, white papers, and publication-ready materials
  • Reviews documents for adherence to publication requirements, submission standards, and editorial guidance
  • Assists authors and stakeholders in preparing materials for internal clearance, peer review, or external submission
  • Edits and refines scientific and medical communications intended for leadership, clinicians, researchers, program staff, and other professional audiences
  • Supports development of executive summaries, briefing materials, talking points, and technical correspondence
  • Recommends revisions that improve the communication of complex scientific and medical information

Compensation & Benefits: The hourly projected pay rate for this position is $41.88 - $47.11 with consideration being given to various factors including but not limited to qualifications, experience, job responsibilities, and geographic location.
