Job Summary

Under direct supervision, collects blood samples by performing venipunctures, finger or heel sticks on patients, ensures the quality of blood and assumes responsibility for the safety and comfort of the patient, following established standards and practices.


Primary Responsibilities

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities performed.

  • Obtains venous and/or capillary blood specimens according to established procedures.
  • Utilizes a computerized system for logging and tracking specimen collection and patient information.
  • Operates simple medical laboratory equipment, such as a centrifuge and microscope.
  • Effectively communicates with laboratory and medical staff to resolve problems and concerns regarding specimens and to properly identify and label specimens for processing, delivery, or storage.
  • Responds to requests for STAT phlebotomy, when indicated.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time and walk periodically in the process of performing phlebotomy work.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Technical Skills

  • Blood Collection: Mastery of venipuncture, capillary sticks, and specialized techniques (e.g., butterfly needles, vacutainer systems).
  • Specimen Processing: Skill in centrifuging, aliquoting, freezing, and packaging blood/fluid samples for laboratory transport.
  • Patient Preparation: Ability to locate and stabilize veins, take vital signs, and conduct finger-stick screenings.
  • Digital Literacy: Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Donor Information Systems for data entry and labeling.
  • Safety Compliance: Strict adherence to OSHA, DEP, and HIPAA regulations regarding bloodborne pathogens and medical waste disposal.

Soft & Interpersonal Skills

  • Patient Communication: Ability to clearly explain procedures, verify patient identity, and ease the anxiety of patients afraid of needles.
  • Empathy & Compassion: Providing compassionate, culturally competent care to donors and patients in clinical distress.
  • Attention to Detail: Absolute precision in labeling samples and cross-referencing requisitions to avoid misidentified or misplaced samples.
  • Time Management: Multitasking effectively in fast-paced hospital and clinical settings.

Education & Experience - Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.   

Education & Experience - Preferred

  • Completion of an accredited program in phlebotomy is preferred. Certification as a registered phlebotomist by a nationally recognized Phlebotomy Society, such as the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of work experience as a phlebotomist is preferred. Experience in a healthcare environment is preferred.
