ER Assistant / Unit Secretary

At Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center (AVRMC), our Emergency Department team depends on strong support staff to ensure efficient, safe, and patient‑centered care. We are seeking a reliable, organized, and detail‑oriented ER Assistant / Unit Secretary to join our team in La Junta, Colorado.

Position Summary
As the ER Assistant / Unit Secretary, you will provide both direct and indirect support in the Emergency Department. You will support patient care activities, coordinate communication between staff and providers, assist with administrative duties, and help maintain a safe, organized, and efficient environment.

Key Responsibilities
Patient Care amp; Department Support
  • Provide direct and indirect support to patient care in the Emergency Department
  • Assist nurses and physicians by coordinating patient needs and ensuring timely support
  • Transport specimens to the laboratory as needed
  • Maintain age‑appropriate safety precautions and patient‑focused care
Communication amp; Coordination
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and staff
  • Answer phones and intercoms promptly and courteously, directing information appropriately
  • Obtain appropriate nursing staff support when needed for patient care
  • Consult with other departments to support an interdisciplinary approach
Unit Secretary amp; Administrative Duties
  • Log all patients accurately into the ED tracking system
  • Enter, verify, and document physician orders in the electronic system
  • Maintain accurate, organized, and up‑to‑date documentation and filing systems
  • Order office and printing supplies while supporting cost containment efforts
Operations, Safety amp; Compliance
  • Maintain compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and infection control standards
  • Operate unit equipment safely and correctly
  • Support core measures and quality initiatives alongside the ER Director
  • Participate in quality improvement activities
Professionalism amp; Teamwork
  • Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and ability to function in high‑stress situations
  • Maintain strong working relationships within the department and across the organization
  • Treat patients, families, and coworkers with respect, dignity, and professionalism
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all ethical and organizational standards

Qualifications
Required
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Basic computer and data entry skills
  • Strong communication, organization, and multitasking abilities
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment
