What is a part time remote medical coder?

Part time remote medical coders are professionals who review clinical documents and assign standardized medical codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services, working fewer than full-time hours and performing their duties from a remote location, such as their home. They help ensure accurate billing and compliance with healthcare regulations by translating healthcare information into universally recognized codes. This role typically requires knowledge of medical terminology, coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and may require certification. Working remotely allows flexibility in scheduling and eliminates the need for commuting to a physical office.

What are the typical challenges faced by part time remote medical coders, and how can they be managed?

Part-time remote medical coders often face challenges such as staying updated with frequent changes in coding guidelines, balancing productivity with accuracy, and feeling isolated from on-site teams. To manage these, it's important to engage in regular professional development, use reliable coding resources, and establish clear communication with supervisors and colleagues. Many organizations offer virtual team meetings and coding forums to help remote coders stay connected and supported.

What does a part time remote medical coder do?

As a part-time remote medical coder, you work from home to process healthcare billing, insurance claims and reimbursement, treatment codes, and other information needed to fully process a patient through your company's system. Part-time remote medical coders often review medical records to ensure the accurate specificity of diagnoses, research codes, abstract information using established methods, identify errors, and audit work from other coders. Some part-time remote medical coders specialize in certain types of coding work, such as particularly complicated situations that need more time devoted to them. Other part-time coders work as independent contractors and support multiple practices at once. There is some flexibility in this industry, so be sure to read job postings carefully if you have a preference.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time remote medical coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Remote Medical Coder, you need a strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding systems such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS, typically supported by a certification like CPC or CCS. Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems, coding software, and secure remote work platforms is essential. Attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and effective collaboration from a distance. These skills are crucial for maintaining compliance, minimizing billing errors, and supporting efficient healthcare operations in a remote work environment.

Job description

About Well Behavioral Health

Well Behavioral Health is an outpatient ecosystem for healing, offering therapy, coaching and IOP treatment options under one roof. WBH offers a variety of services tailored to meet unique needs and build into clients' daily life with flexibility. Stand alone or combined outpatient services include therapy, coaching, nutrition counseling, and groups. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) options include Eating Disorder treatment, Trauma, and a DBT adherent program.

About this role: We're looking for a compassionate Registered Dietitian to join our outpatient ecosystem.

About the Role

We're looking for a compassionate, client-centered Registered Dietitian to join our virtual Eating Disorder IOP nutrition team on a part-time basis. Our RDs provide individual nutrition counseling to help clients build a better relationship with food, offering accountability and support toward their personal nutritional goals with sessions following an initial assessment of food, exercise, lifestyle, and medical history, then weekly built around each client's stage of recovery.

You'll work closely with our multidisciplinary clinical team therapists, case managers, and the Nutrition Supervisor to support whole-person healing for clients navigating eating disorders and co-occurring mental health concerns.

This is a great fit for an RD who values flexibility, telehealth work, and a collaborative, non-diet, nervous-system-informed approach to eating disorder nutrition care.

What You'll Do
  • Conduct virtual nutrition assessments for incoming Eating Disorder IOP clients
  • Provide individual nutrition counseling sessions via telehealth on a weekly basis (weekly sessions are required while a client is enrolled in program)
  • Set RD goals, build an individualized treatment plan, and review/adjust it with the client each session
  • Facilitate virtual nutrition education and meal support groups as part of IOP programming
  • Track client weights per program protocol and monitor for medical/nutritional risk, escalating concerns to the treatment team as needed
  • Send weekly collateral updates to each client's outpatient treatment team, in line with WBH's ROI and confidentiality protocols
  • Complete session notes within 24 hours and keep treatment plans and documentation current in the EHR (Ritten)
  • Collaborate with therapists, case managers, and the Nutrition Supervisor on care coordination, and participate in weekly group supervision
  • Support step-down and discharge planning as clients progress
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA and all applicable state licensure/documentation standards
Requirements:
  • Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) credential through CDR, in good standing
  • NYS Certified Dietitian- Nutritionist (CDN) licensure required for NY-based services
  • Experience or strong interest in eating disorder and behavioral health nutrition care
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience, preferably in behavior health or eating disorder treatment
  • Prior telehealth experience preferred
  • Strong documentation skills and familiarity with EHR systems
  • HIPAA-compliant home workspace with reliable high-speed internet
  • Warm, collaborative communication style and comfort working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Alignment with a non-diet, weight-inclusive, nervous-system-informed philosophy of care
Schedule & Compensation
  • Part-time, 10-15 hours/week flexible within program hours
  • Fully remote / telehealth
  • Compensation: $50-65 /hour, commensurate with experience
