What is a part time remote medical coder?

Part time remote medical coders are professionals who review clinical documents and assign standardized medical codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services, working fewer than full-time hours and performing their duties from a remote location, such as their home. They help ensure accurate billing and compliance with healthcare regulations by translating healthcare information into universally recognized codes. This role typically requires knowledge of medical terminology, coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and may require certification. Working remotely allows flexibility in scheduling and eliminates the need for commuting to a physical office.

What does a part time remote medical coder do?

As a part-time remote medical coder, you work from home to process healthcare billing, insurance claims and reimbursement, treatment codes, and other information needed to fully process a patient through your company's system. Part-time remote medical coders often review medical records to ensure the accurate specificity of diagnoses, research codes, abstract information using established methods, identify errors, and audit work from other coders. Some part-time remote medical coders specialize in certain types of coding work, such as particularly complicated situations that need more time devoted to them. Other part-time coders work as independent contractors and support multiple practices at once. There is some flexibility in this industry, so be sure to read job postings carefully if you have a preference.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time remote medical coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Remote Medical Coder, you need a strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding systems such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS, typically supported by a certification like CPC or CCS. Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems, coding software, and secure remote work platforms is essential. Attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and effective collaboration from a distance. These skills are crucial for maintaining compliance, minimizing billing errors, and supporting efficient healthcare operations in a remote work environment.

What are the typical challenges faced by part time remote medical coders, and how can they be managed?

Part-time remote medical coders often face challenges such as staying updated with frequent changes in coding guidelines, balancing productivity with accuracy, and feeling isolated from on-site teams. To manage these, it's important to engage in regular professional development, use reliable coding resources, and establish clear communication with supervisors and colleagues. Many organizations offer virtual team meetings and coding forums to help remote coders stay connected and supported.

Job description

Description

Be Part of Something Radically Different

At Holon Health, we're not just tweaking the system-we're rebuilding it for the people it's failed. We provide whole-person care to justice-involved individuals living with Substance Use Disorder (SUD)-care that meets people where they are, sees their full humanity, and builds pathways to long-term recovery, not short-term fixes.

Everything we do is designed to deviate from the status quo-from the way we treat our clients to the way we care for our team. We know that meaningful work can't happen without flexibility, trust, and self-care, so we lead with a culture of compassion, inclusion, and respect. If you're ready to join a team that's rewriting the rules and centering people at every turn, read on.

Position Summary

Holon Health is seeking an experienced and compassionate Nurse Practitioner licensed in Missouri to support individuals with SUD through collaborative, integrated care. In this role, you'll work closely with Care Navigators, Recovery Coaches, Case Managers, judicial partners, and community-based organizations to deliver care that addresses the full scope of a client's mental, emotional, and physical needs.

This position offers remote flexibility and can be structured as either full-time (40 hours/week) or part-time (20 hours/week) depending on your availability and interest. You'll provide telehealth-based assessments, medication management, and care coordination to support clients on their recovery journey-and be part of a forward-thinking team breaking down barriers to behavioral healthcare.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct health evaluations to assess substance use, co-occurring conditions, and overall functioning
  • Diagnose health conditions and create individualized treatment plans
  • Prescribe and manage medications, monitor for side effects, and adjust treatment as needed
  • Collaborate with the Holon care team and external providers to deliver coordinated, whole-person care
  • Serve as a clinical consultant on complex or high-need cases
  • Educate clients and families on treatment plans, medications, and recovery support strategies
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with ethical, legal, and medical standards
  • Participate in team meetings, professional development, and continuous training

Requirements

Who You Are

  • A licensed and experienced Nurse Practitioner
  • Deeply compassionate toward individuals living with SUD and mental health challenges
  • Experienced in addiction medicine or psychiatry, with a commitment to person-centered care
  • A strong collaborator who thrives in integrated and team-based care models
  • Organized, flexible, and capable of navigating complex systems
  • Clear and confident in virtual communication with both clients and team members

Education & Experience

  • Active and unrestricted NP license in Missouri (multiple and additional state licenses are a plus)
  • Active DEA license (and CDS where applicable)
  • Several years of experience in behavioral health, addiction medicine, or psychiatry
  • Board certification in specialty preferred
  • Strong documentation skills and proficiency in EHR platforms

The Holon Way
We're building a workplace that works for real life-because we know that when our people are well, they can do their best work. We offer:

  • Competitive hourly compensation plus quarterly incentive
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance for full-time team members
  • 401(k) with company match for all
  • A flexible schedule and room to grow

Our Commitment to DE&I
Diversity, equity, and inclusion aren't just values at Holon-they're the foundation of everything we do. We welcome people of all backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences, and we believe our team is stronger when it reflects the communities we serve. We're proud to be an equal opportunity employer and we encourage candidates from underrepresented backgrounds to apply-even if you don't meet every qualification.
