Overview
Under general direction, the Recreation Program Assistant supports the implementation of recreation programs, with a primary focus on youth athletics and the ability to assist with a variety of other programs based on community needs. This position assists with program instruction, supervision of participants and overall program operations while helping maintain a safe, organized and engaging environment. This position may be filled as a regular part-time or seasonal position depending on program needs. Hours and duration of employment may vary based on seasonal programming demands. Work schedules vary based on programming needs and may include weekday mornings and afternoons, evenings and weekends.
Essential Functions & Duties
- Carry out the day-to-day curriculum and activities for assigned recreation programs.
- Communicate with participants, parents and the public in a professional and courteous manner.
- Foster a fun, inclusive and energetic environment for all program participants.
- Assist with set-up, take-down and proper use of facilities, equipment and program supplies.
- Provide reliable transportation to assigned program site locations.
- Follow direction and guidance from the Program Supervisor and Recreation Supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Experience working with youth or adults in recreation, education, childcare or similar settings preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with participants, parents and the public.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
- Must have reliable transportation to travel to assigned program sites.
Supplemental Information
Physical, Mental, & Environmental Requirements
Must possess a valid Iowa driver's license and maintain reliable transportation. Must be functionally literate in written and spoken English. The position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds, and to operate program and recreational equipment in a variety of physical and environmental conditions. Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments with varying noise levels and weather conditions. Visual and auditory ability must be sufficient to supervise participants, ensure safety and operate standard equipment.
