Job Summary and Essential Functions
This position typically provides performance of general courtroom and legal work in the Goose Creek Magistrate Office; and deals courteously and effectively with fellow employees and citizens.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Serves the public with eviction notices, writs of ejectment, claim and deliveries, small claims summonses and other court related documents.
  • Prepares, maintains and files accurate records as to the service of documents.
  • Performs data entry of court documents.
  • Attends court hearings.
  • May assist in preparation of courtrooms with necessary supplies and ensures equipment is working.
  • May assist with the jurors for jury trials.
  • Assists bailiff in the courtroom during proceedings as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Six (6) months of general work experience;
Special Requirements:
  • Must have and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver's License with a safe driving record;
  • Departmental testing may be administered during interview;
  • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file;
  • Use of personal vehicle required (will be reimbursed for County use);
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of a courtroom and legal setting.
  • Knowledge of personal computers.
  • Skill in the use of general office equipment and computers.

Physical Demands
This position requires the employee to reach with hands and arms; stand; use hands to handle, feel, finger, grasp or operate objects, tools or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use mental acuity; and walk, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Conditions
The work is regularly performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands. Hours will not exceed twenty-nine (29) hours per week. The scheduled hours for this position will be based upon court proceedings, with the ability to work flexible hours when necessary. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
