Job description

Purpose Of Position The CMF Supervisor oversees welding operations, ensures high-quality workmanship, and leads a team of welders or fabricators. This role is responsible for planning, assigning, and coordinating welding tasks while maintaining safety, productivity, and compliance with codes and standards. This position reports directly to the Solid Waste Manager.

Essential Functions Supervise, train, and mentor welders and fabrication staff. Plan, schedule, and prioritize daily welding and fabrication work. Inspect work for accuracy, quality, and compliance with specifications and safety standards.

Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding symbols to guide team members. Ensure proper use, maintenance, and availability of welding equipment and tools. Enforce workplace safety rules, PPE requirements, and safe welding practices.

Maintain inventory of welding supplies, materials, and equipment. Coordinate with other departments, supervisors, or project managers regarding timelines and resource needs. Document completed work, labor hours, material usage, and quality checks.

Assist with hiring decisions, performance evaluations, and corrective actions. Troubleshoot welding issues and provide technical expertise to the team. Inspect, repair, wash out, swap, weld, paint, and number front-load containers.

Repair open-top roll-offs, enclosures, roll-off doors, latches, floors, sides, and ribs; repaint and renumber. Repair compactors and replace cylinders. Assist with residential truck floor and blade repairs.

Maintain hydraulics: fill tanks, clean spills, replace lines. Deliver and pick up containers and litter critters; support City of Tyler events. Mow, weed-eat, and perform inventory at CMF.

Operate welding, cutting, painting, and heavy-equipment tools. Perform other duties as assigned. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Proven leadership or supervisory experience in a welding or industrial environment.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical specifications. Strong knowledge of welding safety protocols. Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Ability to lift heavy materials and equipment as needed. Comfortable working around heat, sparks, and industrial noise. Extensive experience in welding and fabrication (MIG, TIG, stick, cutting, etc.)

Must be able lift, push, and pull over 100lbs. occasionally, 50-100lbs frequently or from 20 up to 50lbs constantly. Must stand for 6 hours daily; turn and sit for 3 hours daily; crouch for 2 hours daily; bend, stoop, walk, climb, crawl, and kneel for 1 hour daily.

Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent preferred; vocational or technical training preferred. Valid welding certifications (AWS or equivalent) preferred. Must have over three (3) years of experience in welding and one (1) year of supervisory experience.

Must have a valid Texas Driver's license, with a clear driving record. Must take an on-site welding test. The City of Tyler will accept two years of relevant experience in place of each year of college required in the job description. Four years of relevant experience will be considered in place of an Associate's Degree, and eight years of relevant experience will be considered in place of a Bachelor's Degree. Any experience required in the Minimum qualifications is in addition to years of experience substituted for a degree.

The City of Tyler supports a policy of a drug and alcohol free workplace. All candidates are subject to pre-employment testing, which may include, but is not limited to, Drug and Alcohol Screenings, Work Fitness Evaluation, Criminal Background Check, and Consumer Report/Credit Check. No person under eighteen (18) years of age will be employed in any regular full-time position.

Persons under eighteen (18) years of age may be employed in temporary or regular part-time positions, if they furnish the City with a minor's release (Form 2-2) and are approved by the City Manager. No person under eighteen (18) years of age will be employed in any position requiring the operation of a City motorized vehicle.
