Job Overview

Wawanesa is looking for an exceptional candidate to take on the role of Senior Actuarial Consultant in our expanding Pricing Research and Development team. As a member of Pricing R&D, your focus will be on improving our pricing sophistication through enhancement of loss cost models, collaborating closely with pricing leaders in leveraging the models to optimize rate changes for our members. You will function as an expert in actuarial methodologies and mentor actuarial staff in the understanding and use of these methods.ย 

Note: we are open to hiring at the Actuarial Consultant or Senior Actuarial Consultant.

Job Responsibilities
  • Researches, extracts, and manipulates complex data from relevant sources, and assesses data quality.
  • Supports the business and overall team by performing analyses/reviews and completing ad-hoc requests/special projects in a timely manner with minimal support from peers and leaders.
  • Evaluates procedures and processes, and recommend alternatives or improvements.
  • Evaluates existing processes to find areas for increased efficiency.
  • Identifies opportunities for automation of routine tasks and implementation of advanced techniques while ensuring ethical and responsible application of solutions.
  • Develops creative approaches to solve complex issues and assesses impacts of solution options.
  • Recommends actions that should be taken in response to industry news and trends
  • Encouraged to represent Wawanesa in industry research, professional standards, and technical working groups and shares insights internally with relevant teams
  • Commits to professional development and continuous experiential learning to build cross-functional knowledge, technical skills, and mastery in competencies.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or other related discipline.
  • More than 6 years of actuarial experience an asset.
  • FCAS designation an asset.
  • Experience with machine learning modelling or other pricing modelling methods and software.
  • Ability to translate problem solving methods and ideas to various computer languages efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of actuarial science, mathematics, probability, statistics, principles of finance and business to problems in insurance.
  • Understanding of database systems and how to interpret/extract data from those systems.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills with ability to communicate at the right level of complexity for the audience.
  • Ability to develop timelines for projects and handling multiple concurrent assignments in a timely manner while proactively keeping leader informed of progress.
  • Works efficiently and cooperatively in a team environment and involve others when appropriate.
  • Ability to ask effective questions to elicit detailed and relevant information.
