Job description

SGM is seeking a Transportation Design Engineer III or IV to join our team. Glenwood Springs office is the preferred location, but open to other office locations, specifically Durango. The ideal candidate has the desire to live, work, and play in Western Colorado. Salary is DOE- Engineer III $89,600-$115,600 Engineer IV $105,400-$131,300


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Design of streets, highways, intersections, roundabouts, shared-use trails, and all related features
  • Production of plan sheets for a typical roadway design project
  • Quantity takeoffs
  • Development of Specification and Estimate packages
  • Use of design criteria and guidelines, such as:
    • AASHTO Geometric Design of Highways and Streets
    • CDOT Design Guide
    • CDOT M & S Standards
    • Municipal or County Design Standards
    • Coordinate aspects of design with other technical staff (drainage, structural, survey, etc.)
    • Review of design and analysis performed by others
  • Assists with competitive proposal development.
  • May lead proposal efforts for smaller projects.
  • Often lead development of project calculations and deliverables.
  • Manage scope, budget, schedule (with oversight) for small-/mid-sized projects or major tasks on large, multidisciplinary projects.
  • May perform part-time construction inspection, and rarely full-time.
  • Regular client interactions through projects.
  • Often serve as day-to-day primary contact.
  • Proactively communicate with supervisor on professional development desires & needs.
  • Actively participate in team endeavors, and possibly, SGM initiatives and committees.
  • Provide informal mentoring to Engineer I, II and other junior staff members.
  • May have a direct report.
  • Help secure repeat clients through project performance. Help acquire new business by recognizing and communicating with supervisor about business opportunities through clients, projects, etc.
  • Develop close working relationships with client staff. Assist with identifying new opportunities with existing clients.
  • Participate in developing/implementing team business development plans and strategies. May participate in "thought leadership" activities.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools.
  • Proficient in computer-assisted design (CAD) Civil 3D and other design, data recording, and analyzation software.
  • Thorough understanding of safety regulations related to assigned projects.
  • Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to resolve minor conflicts with clients.
  • Ability to be both creative and analytical.
  • Extremely detail-oriented and accurate.

Education, Experience, and other Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related engineering field is required.
  • Current Colorado PE or ability to obtain in a timely manner.
  • Minimum of 4 - 10 years of experience
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass an MVR check

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to travel to various project sites.
