Position Description
Advertised Job Summary
The Technology Commercialization Consultant facilitates the growth of small, high-tech, innovative, and fast-growing companies in South Carolina.
Primary duties are:
1. Provide private consulting to small businesses and entrepreneurs on the viability of new technology/product concepts, business planning, IP research/protection, identifying and helping to secure funding support through SBIR/STTR and other government contracts, providing guidance on contract performance, etc.
2. Conduct educational seminars and workshops on technology commercialization in the assigned territory.
3. Develop network/partnerships to expand assistance and connect clients with other resources. This work will be provided in conjunction with general management services offered by core Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) and Procurement Technical Assistance Program (PTAP) advisors, including team or co-consulting.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in related field and 2 years relevant program experience, or bachelor's degree and 4 years relevant program experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Small business and technology commercialization experience. Strong communication skills. Grant writing and consulting experience.

Maintain documentation as required by the SC SBDC and its funding sources including entering all client activity and results into the database. Stay abreast of full SC SBDC network programs and priorities in order to integrate the tech commercialization effort into the organization's operation. Work with the State Director and other Tech Consultants to further develop this initiative and gain national technology commercialization accreditation. Participate in selection of other tech positions.

Develop and conduct seminars (alone or with partners) for groups of small business clients/entrepreneurs that build understanding of government grants/contracts, how to incorporate new products into the company's strategic plan and other topics on successful commercialization.

Develop strategic partnerships and collaborations that expand on SC SBDC services to further promote the growth and success of S.C. technology based companies. Stay abreast of federal, state and regional economic development initiatives and support programs in order to help clients capitalize on these opportunities. Provide connections between clients and university faculty/potential customers/strategic partners in order to help them execute strategic alliances, partnerships, licensing agreements, etc. Initiate and help coordinate projects to match students with SBDC clients as appropriate.

Provide business consulting assistance in areas including commercialization and growth strategies, financing, IP strategy, business management and networking. A significant part of this role is providing guidance on identifying SBIR/STTR and other grant/contract opportunities, assisting with review and submissions and providing ongoing coaching/mentoring after award. Help clients achieve goals and create measurable economic impact as defined by the SBDC.
