Power Electronics Engineer
Cooperative Education (Co-op)
NASA Glenn Research Center
Brook Park, Ohio
HX5 is an award-winning provider of engineering, research and development, and technical services to clients such as NASA and the Department of Defense. Founded in 2004, HX5 is a fast-growing veteran- and woman-owned company with locations nationwide.
HX5, LLC is seeking an part time Co-Op for its Electrical Engineering department to provide power electronics engineering support to NASA's Glenn Research Center (GRC) Space Reactor-1 (SR-1) Freedom project. This project will demonstrate nuclear electric propulsion in deep space by using a Brayton Cycle to drive a multi-phase electric generator. The selected individual will aid in the design, testing, and operation of flight-like three phase inverter circuits.
Required Skills:
  • Understanding of power electronics: inverters, DC switches, and filters.
  • The ability to use ECAD tools (KiCAD) for circuit design and PCB layout.

Other Desired Skills:
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and systematic testing skills required to safely conduct experimental demonstrations on inverters, DC switches, and filters.
  • Familiar with DC power buses, voltage regulation, and power flow management.

Experience:
  • Must be enrolled in an electrical engineering program at an ABET accredited institution.

Other Position Requirements:
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
