Posting Summary The fellow will work with Dr. Greta Bushnell, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at Rutgers School of Public Health and core member within the Center for Pharmacoepidemiology and Treatment Science (PETS). The successful Postdoctoral Research Assistant candidate will further develop research skills under the mentorship of Dr. Bushnell through contributing to NIH funded research in the areas of pharmacoepidemiology, mental health, and substance use. The Postdoctoral Research Assistant will lead impactful research studies, develop their own research questions, publish in scientific journals, and continue their own scholarly and research development. Further, they will have an opportunity to compose and submit their own grant with input and support from PETS and School of Public Health faculty. The fellow would be expected to participate in conferences and publish high-quality journal papers. If of interest, opportunities are also available for teaching experiences with the School of Public Health for courses taught by PETS faculty. This is a two-year position, with a possible extension based on funding availability and performance. PETS was formed to create an interdisciplinary locus for world-class research and training in pharmacoepidemiology at Rutgers. Over the past 8 years, PETS has developed into a major research group, recruiting numerous new core, part-time, and adjunct faculty, and an experienced team of highly trained administrative and analytic staff. The current PETS core faculty have been funded by numerous R01s, K awards, and foundation awards. PETS faculty work on a variety of topics in pharmacoepidemiology and related fields, including traditional drug safety studies, comparative effectiveness research, pharmacoepidemiologic methods, clinical epidemiology, and health services research. They regularly collaborate with researchers across campus, across the US, and internationally, including colleagues from academia, industry, and government. Center faculty and trainees have access to a variety of national electronic health record and claims databases covering well over 120 million lives. PETS faculty members serve on FDA Advisory Committees, on study sections at the National Institutes of Health, committees at the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, and in various roles within clinical and research organizations, particularly ISPE, where PETS faculty serve in numerous leadership roles.   • A doctorate degree in pharmacoepidemiology, epidemiology, biostatistics or related field.
  • Knowledge in pharmacoepidemiologic research methods along with experience, or interest, in mental health-focused research.
  • Experience with conducting research in administrative claims data and programming skills in SAS or R.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, and the ability to present scientific findings in various formats and to compose manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Ability to work well independently and in a collaborative team environment including research analysts, scientists, as well as other PETS trainees and faculty. Excellent organizational, planning, project management, and problem-solving skills.

  • Develop and support the creation of scientific protocols and statistical analysis plans for grant funded studies
  • Conduct data analyses, interpret, and present study results with appropriate conclusions and/or recommendations relevant to research activity.

The mission of the center is to advance pharmacoepidemiology and related fields by conducting world-class research and facilitating high-quality training. PETS builds on strong existing faculty and research infrastructure and enjoys substantial support from Rutgers Biomedical and Health Science (RBHS). RBHS was created during the 2013 integration of the health professional schools from Rutgers University and the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The eight schools, six centers and institutes and a behavioral health care network of RBHS collectively comprise one of America's largest, most comprehensive university-based centers for studying and improving human health and health care. The Institute for Health, RBHS, and the substantial resources of Rutgers University offer a rich collaborative environment for conducting pharmacoepidemiology and health services research. RBHS is home to Rutgers Health Group, New Jersey's largest multi-specialty medical group that includes the state's only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, a large behavioral health delivery system, and Robert Wood Johnson Partners, a commercial and Medicare ACO. RBHS partners with RWJBarnabas Health, the state's largest healthcare delivery system. Research among these units expands considerably the opportunities for researchers.
