POSITION SPECIFICS

Title: Polysomnographer

FTE: 0.6 (24 hrs/week)

Schedule: Night shift - 7:00pm-7:00am

Holiday Rotation: None

Weekend Rotation: None

On Call Requirements: None

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for conducting comprehensive Polysomnography and Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT) to include: patient preparation, monitoring, analyzing, titrating (including BPAP/Complex), and scoring sleep studies in accordance with AASM standards.

POSITION TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Verify insurance information, including pre-authorizations, and insure all clinical prerequisites are met prior to arranging testing.

  • Coordinate patient scheduling for in-lab and home-based testing; provide comprehensive education regarding the study process.

  • Educate patients on the principles and therapeutic benefits of PAP therapy including CPAP, Bi-level, and Adaptive Servo-Ventilation (ASV).

  • Measure and apply sensors for a full clinical montage (EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, and respiratory effort) according to AASM standards.

  • Perform specialized mask fitting and desensitization to ensure patient comfort and therapy compliance.

  • Recognize and document respiratory events in real-time to initiate PAP titration protocols when clinical criteria are met.

  • Titrate Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Bi-level therapy (including Complex/ASV) to achieve optimal therapeutic results.

  • Analyze and mark Periodic Leg Movements (PLM's), Cardiac arrhythmias, and other physiological events.

  • Score sleep studies, including sleep staging, arousals, and all respiratory and movement events, according to the current AASM Scoring Manual rules. Generate a comprehensive technical summary and preliminary report for physician interpretation.

  • Support the Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT) program, including patient instruction, device dispensing, and data download.

  • Assist with departmental Quality Assurance (QA) metrics, execute data entry, and coordinate with home care providers for therapeutic set-ups.

  • Participate in monthly safety inspections and biological calibrations on all PSG and PAP equipment; maintain clinical inventory and report equipment malfunctions via appropriate channels.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • Required - Successful completion of a polysomnography program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) program with the polysomnography specialty option or A-STEP introductory program and modules.

  • Preferred - None

Experience:

  • Required - Minimum of 1-2 years of clinical experience performing and scoring polysomnography.

  • Preferred - 3 -5 years of experience with Cadwell Easy III or similar digital PSG platforms; proven experience in scoring and advanced PAP titration (Bilevel/ASV).

Licenses and Registrations:

  • Required - Registered Polysomnographic Technologist certification (RPSGT) within one year from hire date.

  • Preferred - Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) credential.

Certification(s):

  • Required - Basic Life Support (BLS) within 3 months of hire.

  • Preferred - None
