Community Work-Study Program

The Community Work-Study Program (CWS) provides federal financial aid eligible students the opportunity to work part-time at nonprofit organizations that serve the public interest.

Goals of this program include:

  • Developing interest in public service through employment with TAMIU and placement in local nonprofit, government, or community-based organizations.

  • Applying skills and theories gained through coursework to solve problems and explore issues outside the classroom.

  • Enhancing career competencies, such as critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and leadership.

  • Articulating how experiences will shape personal, academic, and professional pursuits.

Job Summary

The program intern will provide administrative, event, outreach, and multimedia support to assist with the daily operations and programming of the organization. This position will help support film screenings, workshops, community events, educational initiatives, volunteer coordination, and public outreach efforts. The program intern will gain hands-on experience in nonprofit arts administration, film programming, community engagement, and media-related projects while contributing to Laredo Film Society's mission of using film as an artistic, cultural, and educational tool to build community.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning, preparing, and supporting film screenings, workshops, and community events.

  • Support event logistics, including setup, check-in, materials preparation, and post-event organization.

  • Assist with the development and distribution of educational materials related to film, storytelling, media literacy, and community programming.

  • Support volunteer recruitment, communication, coordination, and event-day assistance.

  • Collaborate with staff, volunteers, local artists, filmmakers, and community organizations to support film-related initiatives.

  • Assist with social media content creation, event promotion, and community engagement efforts to raise awareness of Laredo Film Society programs and activities.

  • Help prepare flyers, digital content, outreach materials, or other promotional items as needed.

  • Provide administrative support, including maintaining records, preparing reports, organizing files, responding to communications, and supporting general office tasks.

  • Participate in meetings and contribute ideas to improve programming, outreach, and community engagement.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the operations and mission of Laredo Film Society.

Minimum Requirements

  • Enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours per semester for undergraduates, 3 credit hours for graduates).

  • Maintain a TAMIU overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students.

  • Must have a current and complete file with the Office of Financial Aid.

  • Must demonstrate financial need by submitting a FAFSA application annually.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible non-citizen with an alien registration number.

  • Must meet all other requirements as stated in TAMIU's Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a professional and respectful demeanor.

  • Ability to work effectively in a small team environment, including taking initiative, communicating clearly, and assisting with a variety of responsibilities as needed.

  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating with staff, volunteers, artists, filmmakers, and community partners.

  • Interest in film, media, storytelling, arts administration, nonprofit work, community engagement, or cultural programming.

  • Interest or experience in marketing, communications, public relations, social media management, graphic design, photography, videography, or content creation is preferred.

  • Attention to detail when preparing materials, maintaining records, supporting events, and communicating with the public.

  • Ability to provide quality customer service and interact professionally with event attendees, volunteers, community partners, and the public.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Familiarity with Canva, social media platforms, basic photo/video editing tools, or other marketing/design tools is a plus.

  • Work schedules are created by the department based on departmental needs but ensure it does not conflict with class schedule.

Rate of Pay: $10.00/hour for up to 15 hours per week
