Job Description: Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy Technician Job Summary: Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the medication inventory, and maintaining patient records. All technician activities are supervised by a licensed pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist.

Pharmacy Technician Essential Accountabilities:

Department Specific Accountabilities:

  • Fills physician orders, medication carts, and stock requisitions accurately.

  • Prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile preparations (including parenteral nutrition) safely and accurately using appropriate techniques.

  • Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately per established schedule.

  • Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing medications and supplies in appropriate locations. Aids in returns and recalls of medications.

  • Completes and documents all assigned medication storage area inspections as required. Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable medications.

  • Repackages bulk medications in unit-dose packages safely and accurately per established procedures using appropriate techniques.

  • Accurately fills medications and maintains inventory in automated dispensing machines.

  • Refills controlled substances accurately and reconciles inventories in automated distribution system in accordance with state laws and regulations and facility policy.

Other Job Accountabilities:

  • Answers telephone using appropriate phone etiquette, fields questions, and directs calls as needed.

  • Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately. Files documentation in appropriate locations.

  • Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately and participates in interdepartmental billing.

  • Maintains current technician certification.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Pharmacy Technician Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. College courses or vocational education desirable but not required.

Experience:

  • 2–3 years pharmacy technician experience preferred, but not required

Skills:

  • Knowledge of the following will be needed to effectively complete job duties: Microsoft Office Suite, electronic mail, fax machine, copier, telephones, personal computer, printer, scanner, electronic health record, automated dispensing machines.

  • Attention to detail, interpersonal skills within and outside of the pharmacy department, accountability, and willingness to learn are strongly encouraged.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Registered as a pharmacy technician in good standing with the State Board of Pharmacy.

  • Certification as designed by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or similar certification approved by Kansas Board of Pharmacy prior to starting job or complete certification within one year of employment.
