Position Available: August, 2026
Position Purpose
The substitute teacher is considered a ministerial employee by their role working in a Catholic School and agree to work diligently to support and strengthen the Catholic Church and its value system. By word and example Catholic school employees support all the official religious teachings of the Catholic Church throughout their personal and professional lives. Substitute teachers agree to play a substantial role in conveying the Catholic Church's message and carrying out its mission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the school principal, the successful substitute teacher will:
  • Serve as a positive role model and support the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church at all times.
  • Create a faith-focused learning environment within the classroom and school in which he or she serves.
  • Facilitate student success and growth in both academic and interpersonal skills.
  • Implement the absent teacher's written plans with fidelity, document student progress, activities, and outcomes as directed by the teacher.
  • Leave detailed notes for the absent teacher.
  • Create a flexible, safe, and optimal learning environment.
  • Serves as a model of the Catholic faith in words, actions, speech, dress, and demeanor.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction and student learning.
  • Differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles and needs, as per the teacher's directives.
  • Conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Ensures that students conduct conforms with the school's standards and Diocesan policies.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Utilizes available technology to enhance instruction.
  • Supervises students in activities that take place outside of the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation, student arrival, and student dismissal.
  • Seeks the advice and counsel of the principal and fellow educators as appropriate when dealing with classroom issues.
  • Uses standard office equipment, Microsoft Office, and other technology to enhance lessons.
  • Additional duties as assigned by school administration.

Education and Experience
  • Educator Licensure: The candidate must hold a current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL), a current Illinois Substitute License or a valid out of state certificate from a state with which Illinois has reciprocity.
  • Holds a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education or a related discipline that is applicable to the teaching assignment.
  • Practicing Catholic preferred but required to teach religion or theology courses.
  • Previous successful teaching experience in elementary or secondary education preferred.
  • Experience in differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all students preferred.
  • Excellent communication and classroom management skills are essential to success.
  • Knowledge of Catholic elementary school curriculum and concepts.

Work Schedule
This is a part-time, non-benefited position. The substitute teacher will work as needed or on a schedule developed by the principal.
Salary Range : $120 per day for the first 20 days. After 20 days, pay is determined by education and experience, in accordance with the teacher's salary schedule.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently be required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, feel with hands, reach with arms, walk up or down multiple flights of stairs, and be physically able to perform duties as assigned, including the ability to lift up to 20-30 pounds if needed.
  • Works in standard office and school building environments, but also has the ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.
